Ortlieb Brompton 0 bag in v good condition. It’s been used regularly, but these things are totally bombproof and there are very few signs of wear. It’s 100% o’clock waterproof and has removable pouches so that the capacity can be changed depending on need. Perfect for lugging a laptop around without ever thinking twice about the weather.
It’s this model (but black): https://www.rutlandcycling.com/accessories/bags-luggage/brompton-ortlieb-o-bag-with-removable-strap-various-colours_382806
The only reason for sale is because the rest of the bike was stolen, so it’s now surplus to requirements. Cost £220 new.

I’m in Walthamstow, and ride out to barking most days if you’re en route.

This tandem was purchased with the intention of some big trips, but a spinal cord injury got in the way of that, and it has been sitting inside waiting for some adventures. It's got all modcons, including a Rohloff rear hub, SS couplers, carbide coated rims and a tandem specific Hope disc at the rear with amazing stopping power.
It's been ridden a few hundred miles at most. It cost approx £4,400 new and needs a good home!
For anyone that doesn't know Thorn tandems, more details can be found here: http://www.sjscycles.com/thornpdf/ThornRavenTwinBroHiRes.pdf

I'm starting to get my head around what's on offer. Believe it or not, I didn't even know that CSC or mirrorless cameras were a thing, and i'm really surprised how much the market has developed since I last looked into digital cameras!
I didn't realise how slim the CSC cameras are, and a lot of them are plenty slim and light enough for me.
Option 1: CSC with pancake lens:
- Sony (Alpha or Nex) -
- Lumix (GX85, GM1) - Not so many of these available secondhand at a first look
- Fujifilm (Xt20) - I can't make heads or tails of the Fujifilm range, why are there so many X cameras without much clear differentiation
The one that really jumps out is the Sony Alpha a6000 , both because there is a big secondhand market and because it seems to have stood the test of time. Coupled with a pancake lens it would be good for lightweight, and then with potentially a bigger lens for less weight sensitive situations it gives me the flexibility to have something a bit more serious.
I reckon if I hunt I can find one with a decent lens for sub £300. I saw one with three different lenses for £350 (I could've sold the telephoto to get down to below my budget.
Thoughts?
@Acliff - you suggested a GM1 or GX85, is this any better than the Sony offerings in your opinion? USB rechargable is good, but having multiple batteries is definitely a positive in my book
@pdlouche - I think you might've nailed it. I had no idea you could get down to something so slim and light. the a6000 is under 400g which will definitely do for me. Do you think that an a6000 is far superior to a Nex5?
@psee - not many available secondhand as far as I can see. Any links?
There are also the compacts. but the more I think about it, the more I agree that this is too much of a sacrifice and doesn't give me a very versatile unit.
Option 2: Compact
- Nikon coolpix
- Leica X1
- X100
Any of these definitely still worth considering?
Thanks again
Tim - Sony (Alpha or Nex) -

This is all useful info. I guess i also wasn’t super clear about exactly what my reasoning is in the first place and whilst I totally grew the points about phone cameras, it’s just not what I’m after.
We often do multiple day trips walking, bike packing and climbing. Power is hard to come by and my trusty iPhone 5 stays off as an emergency backup. I have no intention of upgrading my phone as a refurbished iPhone 5 is as good as it gets in my book - carrying a phone worth a grand is not something I want to do or can afford to.
I really want something that feels like a camera, but doesn’t weigh a tonne like my film SLR. When I only have my phone, i just straight up don’t take photos.
The point about focal range is interesting. Also if my imagined budget is silly and I can get something much better for another hundred that would be good to know.
My priories
- relatively light and compact
- Feels like using a camera
- not a phone
- relatively light and compact

Great, I’ll look into these.
My partner is a writer and we’re looking for more bits and pieces like this that we wrote https://www.pannier.cc/journal/north-to-narvik/
But also in printed form if possible.
Will have a laptop.

So is there nothing more compact than a full blown slr that’s worth getting? When I have my film camera I take decent considered photos, but when I’m shooting on my phone I just don’t! I’d like all the functionality of an SLR, but I just know from experience (got rid of my 450D a couple of years ago) that I won’t be willing to carry something that big with me and it means I just don’t take photos!
A big part of this is about going back to digital to avoid having to try and process film on the road, but I don’t want to just match my current film cameras with a digital version and the gap I have is for something smaller.
-
I’m sure this has been asked lots of times, but what are people’s thoughts on a decent compact digital. I love shooting film on an SLR, but climbing and bike trips require something more lightweight and we’re going to be on the road for a while next year and would like to avoid processing.
Ideally enough resolution to be printed or at least put on a professional looking website.
Recommendations? Things for sale?
Probably not looking to pay upwards of £300, but if you can get anything good for that much will reconsider.
Edit: and would also welcome opinions on how light/compact it’s worth going before it just makes sense to use a phone

That's a good question! Will find out.

Thorn Raven Discovery - potential sale
Hi all. My parents have a Thorn Raven Discovery that was bought for a ride to Istanbul that never happened because of a spinal injury. Despite some adaptations to try and make it usable, it never really got the use it deserved and it’s just gathering dust.
It’s quite a specific piece of kit, and we were wondering if there might be somewhere specific to post it for sale, and whether anyone knows of a potential good home. Currently in Bristol.
It cost £4,300 in 2011 and It’s really high spec, with a rohloff, couplers and triple brake setup (hydraulic disc and twin v brakes).
My instinct is that the market for these things is quite specific. I’m sure we could just stick it on the Bay, but would much prefer to come to a deal with someone direct.

The end of the toggle chain on my girlfriends Brompton has snapped off inside the hub. The shear is right at the end of the metal pin (not the chain) and has left the threaded part firmly embedded inside the axle.
Any recommendations on who could look at this relatively quickly and without costing the earth? I'm guessing it's not the easiest DIY task as taking a geared hub apart has always seemed a bit fraught.
Edit: In East
Yeah, the interface between my iPhone and Mac are also a bit clunky too. Luckily there’s always the memory slot to bypass using having to get them to talk!
