I've recently but a bike together using mismatched old parts and although i'm very happy with the ride, I've got a safety issue.
The bb i used is a Shimano sealed cartridge 130mm. It's threaded in nicely on the drive side, but the plastic cup on the passive side has about half a cm of thread showing. Obviously the bb is intended for a larger shell but the chainline is very nice and I'm hesitant to mess with it now that it's all smooth and lovely.
So... Is this going to fail catastrophically and rip the bb thread out?
Is it a risk to my safety - I run brakeless with 77" (I'm getting a brake soon)Thanks in advance

fuck brakeless spinning that gear! get a brake and a bigger chain ring, when you got the dollar, you will be far happier on it
How could you possibly know what gear I'm running?
It's a 40-14 which is 77" the standard 48-18 is 72"
Also in Brighton the higher cadence makes it easier to climb the hills on my way to work.
It's not spinny at all and I wiped the floor with a group of riders on a track the other day. -

Looks nice, but I'd swap the lights for some bartape, dark brown or black.
Yeah, I reckon dark brown if I can get a colour which matches the saddle. I've just maxed out my student overdraft and am living on the frozen stuff left in the fridge - potato waffes and spinach for lunch. So no bar tape untill student loan time (only 3 weeks to go..)

I doubt this. It hardly looks modern, though I know what you mean.
I think it's more likely that it was just one too many patterns. They had new ownership a few years ago who presumably had to make some decisions about which saddles to keep going on with. Maybe this one was too niche. I think the old tourers and long distance riders preferred them, they have lots more leather around the skirts and completely cover the front wishbone/bolt assembly.
I got some stick at my LBS when I said i was doing a long tour on it. They thought I was trying too hard to be masculine by sitting on a hunk of leather when modern alternatives are available.
Aesthetics aside I think leather saddles make for a really good ride, now that it's properly worn in I feel like it was tailor made for my arse.

I've just finished my first fixed build - I've been riding on mismatched beater for 6 months or so, but this is the first bike I'm reasonably satisfied to call finished.
Pictures here
The spec is:
Mike Mullet road frame - purchased from Hilarystone (front fork not original)
On one hubs laced to Open Pro rims
Surly 14t rear sprocket with Surly lockring
Unknown vintage cranks
Shimano sealed cartridge bb
Campagnolo headset
knackered old custom stem
knackered old road bars
knackered old seatpostSaddle - Anyone got any idea what this is? My mate found it in a skip in Bristol an I payed him a fiver for it. Don't think it's a Brooks but it's lovely, rode a 1k mile trip over summer on it and it felt great.
As you might be able to tell, I ran out of money half way through, the upshot of it is that it cost me relatively little - about £180 in total.
How much would you estimate it to be worth as a complete bike?

Feels solid, I'll keep a close eye.
How much does the plastic cup actually do? It always seemed strange to me to have plastic anywhere near one of the hardest working components!
