I bought the Bahrain Victorious Vuelta jersey. I'm not a fan of the team or the country, I just like the design, especially the sanctimonious messages for car drivers on the back. I even got the socks which match the blue stripe on the sleeves. Thinking about the blue as a theme - there's an Elite bottle in a similar shade. Maybe also a good colour to paint some components? Brake calipers? Handlebars? Crankset? My frame is white.

Gawd. At least you got some free pyjamas. I didn't manage to nick anything. Pyjamas would have been such a good souvenir.

The only follow-up was a letter to my home from a debt collector, offering a 90% discount. The hospital didn't sue me, so I seem to have got away with it. A few years later the hospital changed its name to the Zuckerberg San Francisco General, so they're probably not broke.

It was nearly a lot worse. I'd met a woman a few weeks before and was staying ar her place. She was with me at the bike shop when I set off on the test ride. The Serotta was put in the ambulance. As I had no ID (left my wallet at the bike shop) someone at the hospital inspected the bike, found the shop's sticker on it, and called them. So by the time I woke up the bike was back at the shop and the woman was at my bedside. She'd pretended to be my wife so she could get into my room. The brain surgeons were checking me every 90 minutes, day and night, to see if the bleeding on my brain had got any worse. If it had, they would have operated. When I woke up, one of them started questioning me, to see how my brain was doing. And his first question was 'who is this woman'? I couldn't remember - we hadn't known each other that long, she had a really unusual Iranian name, and we hadn't ever needed to use each other's names much anyway. Then it came to me - Mashhad. Phew.

I was a John Doe once. Scooped up from the road by a San Franciso paramedic, unconscious, with no ID, so he put John Doe as my name on his forms. I was test riding a Serotta and hadn't persuaded my brain that the right brake lever goes to the rear brake in America. So I locked the rear on a corner, smacked my head on the road and fractured my skull. After a couple of days of regular attention from a brain surgeon, the bill was well into five figures. And I'd forgotten to get insurance. So I skedaddled. Several epic fails I suppose. A nice bit of brain damage too.

I wanted a machine for my campervan, and a real machine would have been too big and awkward and messy, so I thought I'd see what capsule machines are like, expecting a rather severe compromise. Tried a Nespresso, yuck, decided I'd rather use a Bialetti, but then tried the Iper, just because of the Illy name really. I like their beans and was intrigued that they'd taken over the company which used to make Iperespresso machines, and I was stunned. It's even good enough to drink it black. But usually I have it with microwaved milk. For reference, the other places I like to go, apart from my kitchen, are Monmouth and the Little Cat cafe in Myatt's Field Park. I live in Brixton but dislike all the coffee in the coffee shops here.

I expect lots of people here have tried Nespresso and assumed that all capsule machines are as gross. And they'll never try another capsule machine because they'll almost certainly never encounter anything but Nespresso.

Just trying to see whether anyone's open minded enough to even consider the possibility.

I'm saying a certain capsule machine compares well with competently operated commercial machines. Not neceesarily the same coffee in each machine.

Never heard of bike theft when you're on the bike. Is this a big thing now?

I've ruled out a bar bag. She needs something she can sleep in and be protected from the elements. Assuming the trials go well I'll make something suitable. It will be aero and ultralight of course. Probably suspended from the tt bar extensions.

His workshop is in his home. Never seen it, but the outside always looks like the photo in the Guardian.

It dates from 2007 and was discontinued years ago. It's been used and the seller is the second owner. He bought it from "someone in Spain". It's the MTB version but he says he used it on a Merida road bike. He doesn't seem to know the specs. But he says there was plenty of clearance with the chainstay. It looks in good condition from the photos, but it's 14 years old...and would I run into fitting problems because of....I don't know...shell length or something? I think my bike might well have a BB30, but I bought it used recently and I don't know.
