A moped used to look more like a motorbike, with a frame and footpegs. It also had pedals, so you could supplement the engine power.

Now a moped looks like a scooter, with a platform to put your feet on. The pedals have gone because the motor is more powerful. But it's still limited by law to 50cc and 28 mph. The legal limits on cc and speed are what define a moped. If it's got more than 50cc or goes faster than 28mph, it's not a moped any more. It's either a scooter (if it has a platform for your feet) or a motorbike (if it has a frame and footpegs.)

A scooter with a petrol engine used to be called a motor scooter, but everyone started abbreviating that to scooter. The word scooter without the motor prefix used to be reserved for something with no engine, just two wheels and a platform to stand on. You would 'scoot' along with your foot.

Now we have another type of motor scooter with an electric motor, which we call an e-scooter.

Here are the viilains. Note: they're on scooters, not mopeds or motorbikes. It helps to know the difference so you can tell whether someone is a threat or not. Two scrotes on one scooter is a suspicious thing to see. They'd rather have a scooter each, but they share one when they go thieving. The scrote on the back grabs the goods.

Looks like your rails flatten into a wide tab, whereas mine just have the same 7mm circular cross section throughout their length.

What does the rear end of the rails look like? And are your rails circular , with a diameter of 7mm? They look much fatter in the photo, but maybe it's the perspective.

I have similar stories, but I don't think the root cause is a question of new technology or a recent drop in ethics. The overwhelming majority of journalists would much rather be in a New York Times environment with fact checkers on tap and no lying allowed. But nearly everyone in the UK has been forced to cut corners. Nobody likes it.

You do get a severe lack of ethics from the people competitive and ruhless enough to rise to the top, but I think that's always been the way. Paul Dacre edited the most profitable paper. He got the job in 1992. Even after the internet had caused huge job losses at other papers he could still afford to overcommission by 200% just to force his journalists to compete with each other. People try extra hard when two thirds of the work is spiked every day. That was one of his ways of keeping standards high. Another was to shout in someone's face in the middle of the newsroom that they're a fucking cunt.

Nasty proprietors also hire nasty editors. Rupert Murdoch and Robert Maxwell are/were pure poison, and they dragged ethics down very deliberately. The Barclay brothers are as bad. The root cause is that publishing a big paper gives you power and money, and an awful lot of the people who succeed in getting the most power and money are completely amoral.

The quality's not dropped because of lower ethics, it's because the internet means everyone's doing three jobs, constantly in fear of redundancy, and with hardly any time for fact checking or subbing. It's just a fight for survival. If you want time for research or second-sourcing, tough luck.

The New York Post has been going for 200 years and it's never had any scruples.

And speaking as a former journalist I wouldn't say that smartphones and social media have changed the ethics of the British papers.

It has 2 tiny bolts, one each side of the U shape part of the rail. You can just see one bolt in the pic - it has a silver washer under it. The other is too dark to see. Rubbish photo, sorry. I'll try a different camera.

I was also going to remove the rails for another pic, but I've just rounded off the bolt heads by using a star bit instead of an allen bit, because I can't see tiny things with my bifocals. I suppose my eyesight is now so bad that I'll have to ask the optician for separate glasses for close work. Getting old is shit.

Some quality bits there. I'm also thinking about the infinity carbon rails, but Infinity say they won't fit because I have the first version of the saddle. Any chance you could pleeaase post a pic of the underneath of your saddle and measure your rails? (I've asked Infinity for this but not got anywhere.) I'd like to get the rails and modify them to fit if at all possible.

On South West Trains services I never book, or ask anyone, but I avoid rush hour. The guards don't seem to care whether I put the bike in the space provided next to the toilet, or I leave it by the doors. I sit nearby so I can move it to the other side of the carriage at the stations.
