There was no plastering included in the quote. Spoke to the boss, who explained that there is a deafening layer of hardwood+ rubble/ash/dirt between lath and plaster ceiling and upstairs floorboards. His explanation was that it would be a much longer, dirtier job if they came from above, having to lift a lot of floorboards to clear it all out and repeatedly cut through to fish the cabling though.
I think that replastering sections of a ceiling is probably preferential to having to replace a load of broken floor boards, which we would quite like to have exposed.
I'm putting a lot of this down to lack of experience in what to expect with having works done. But on the other hand trying to not allow it be taken advantage of.

It's all lath and plaster. No plastering was included in the quote, as it is in a state of complete redecoration, no plaster on walls up to 1m because of damp proofing etc. However we weren't planning on touching the ceilings as they seem ok.
Layout is attached, and the floor above is exactly the same. Pendant is marked in red, and it is passing through a wooden beam which spans the room 'vertically' in the attached plan.

We are having a rewire done in a 1850's 2 story house. In the downstairs they have cut an 8 inch hole in the roof next to the light fitting rather than lift floorboards above. Is this normal or should I be annoyed?
Leading on from that, how hard is it to plaster over the whole and repaper a ceiling?

Torridon, in late April/May. It's some of the best scotland has to offer as the Munro's are from sea level. Plenty wilderness to get lost in. There are bothies near there too, Easan Dorcha is an easy off road cycle too and Coire Fionnaraich.
You could get a train from inverness to Strathcarron then walk over to Torridon, resupply then walk back to Strathcarron, using the two bothies to sleep in. Bearnais is a bothy south of there if you wanted a bit more walking.
