Thank all!
I guess basically what I've found out is that using different crank lengths is not a cardinal sin. It's not messing my knees up or something. And that while in an ideal world our multiple bikes would be set up as close to one another as possible that isn't possible if your doing more than one kind of event.
I've alway been very fussy about setting my bike up - you really can tell when it's only a little bit out. But until I lived relatively close to a velodrome and so considered getting a track bike of my own rather than a hire bike - I hadn't ever considered how track crank lengths would affect this.
Are there specific rules about pedal clearance at different velodromes?

I've UTFS until i'm blue in the face and popular internet search engines but cant find an answer - maybe i'm being too fussy. Here goes:
If you own more than one bike and your training and racing seriously should you have the same crank length on all of your machines?
I would have thought that having the two bikes as similar as possible would be of benefit for training but track bikes tend to have shorter cranks than the 175mm ones I have on my road bike.
I'm asking because I want the track bike i'm building to be OK on the velodrome so logic (and possibly rules) tell me i shouldn't have longer than 170 mm cranks on it.

whoops - i see it now in tiny little blue letters at the top of my screen 'Birmingham' i shouldn't just use the 'new posts' search!
All the places I've lived have had semi-organised night training rides (Edinburgh, Bristol, London). Why not have a look on local cycling club websites. I bet there is something going on that you would be welcome to join.

mini pump - crank brothers I think this is the best i've ever had. small enough for a jersey pocket powerfull enough to get you home at a decent pressure.
rear light - exposure flare's seem popular at the moment. I have a trusty cat eye
700c tyres for winter roads - michelin krylion or lithion for 23mm schwalbe marathon if you want a wider tyre.
clipless pedals - depends if you want to be able to walk in the shoes or not. I use look keo classics on my road bike and double sided spds on my commuter so I can walk.

removing 15mm from the fork will rotate the whole bike about the the rear hub which acts as a pivot point. This will have rotated the BB, bars & saddle forward and down (the amount they move is relative to the distance from the rear hub). Presumably ed has adjusted his saddle so that it's in the correct position relative to the BB. So now he needs to compensate for the change in saddle to bar height and reach. I'd do this with a new stem rather than some weird head set/fork magic. Or get a new fork that fits :-)

Is there any way that these wheels could work with a Dura Ace 7410 8 speed setup?
Either by using an 8 speed Campag cassette or by fitting a Shimano cassette?
I've heard that on some Campag wheels, the hub carrier can be changed to allow a Shimano cassette to be fitted.
Just use a campag cassette and chain then it will work fine with the rest of your shimano parts. I do the same in reverse with a campag group on shimano hubs/cassette/chain.

Answer your own question by taking the chain off the chain ring so its loose an checking that it fits onto the sprocket easily.
Can you give us any more information? Are both of the chain and cog new? Are they both the same pitch? does the noise occur all the time or is it just when your pedalling hard?
