Made some progress with the Ron. Plan is to get it functional first. I'll see how it rides before making any major component upgrades etc. Getting very excited though, just need wheels and cranks (hopefully on their way). Originally I was going to magic gear fixie it, gladly the frame spoke to me and said "fixed Ron is wrong, give me gears!" Anyway, it really is a beautiful frame. Unfortunately the chainstay has been badly crimped with a hammer at some point. I'll touch that spot up soon. Pic:

Or get 8-speed indexed shifters and a matching dérailleur.
Yeah, I could. I'm trying to be super cheap and use whatever second parts I can get, so going for versatility. I am failing though as new parts are temptingly cheap. I'm also struggling without the required knowledge...
At the risk of being spoon fed information, what would you suggest for a functional 1x7 or 8 setup with a DT shifter?

Group buy?

i've bought a pair of the x10is from amazon - £99. i fell like a bit of a cunt for spending a bradman on in-ears that are likely for break in 6 months, but at least i can blame you, lowpug. :P
Ha, good choice. I hope they work out for you. The sound will loosen up dramatically after about 2 weeks of use. Initially they'll be a bit harsh. Also careful with the source material - 128kbps mp3 will sound a bit poo. 256 and above, i.e. most streaming services will be OK. Obvs, the higher the quality, the better. FLAC!
If the silicone tips don't work out, Comply foam tips are great, but an ongoing cost. Also, use the little box to transport them, I had a pair of X10i for 2 years no issues until i left them on plane :( Bought another set straight away.Oh, and don't worry about the extra cash for the "i" model. According to most reviews the X10i is built better than the standard version.
BTW, they are excellent in-flight. They block out the noise beautifully.

If i was to buy Shimano RS501 (bladed) and a Shimano 8spd HG50 cassette will I be able to get it to work with virtually any old shimano rear derailleur and down tube shifter? Considering the price of a new set of wheels + cassette I'm finding it hard to see the value in an old second hand set for my RC tt build. Correct assumption?

Not sure if I'll get anything yet. I'm a notorious ditherer with stuff like this. I'll happily drop similar money on a bike, but cars and motorbikes worry me - it feels like they're always dangling a financial Sword of Damocles over my head, what with potential repair bills and the like.
Sparky, never ask car people about buying a car. It's like asking about bicycles on the internet.
But since you asked - it sounds like you need nothing more complex than a box with 4 wheels. Either something extremely common like a Ford focus or like the above video, an old volvo.
I know nothing of buying cars in the UK but something similar?

Hi all. I'm starting to collect parts to get my Ron Cooper lo-pro up-and-running.
Planning on a 1x7 build (only has one DT shifter boss) and I need parts.
Budget takes precedence over condition - this is not a concourse level rebuild!Have some lovely dark green/blue anodised BR-1050 calipers thanks to Tester so I'd like items of similar vintage.
Rear derailleur – something like a Shimano 600 7 speed? - sorted now.
DT shifter – compatible with the above - also sorted.Other bits I could use - Shimano crankset. I currently have a 600 set, fc-7260 i think but would like an option.
Wheelset - something like mavic cosmics of that era. 7 speed block??
Otherwise I'm buying some R501 if they would work.If you have anything to clear out, let me know!
Cheers -
watching the vids and reading this thread is killing me. 13/14 was the first time i've missed a season in 15 years. normally get a minimum of 3 weeks a season. The consolation is that next year, I'll be back in Aus so Hello to Japan pow! Gotta get back to BC too.
@ Indra - shoulder season is the best, almost anywhere. Not sure if it's just luck but I've always had great trips late season. Less people always helps. So much more fun to be had on near empty slopes.

Reading about RC is what made me register on this forum in the first place. Nice frame, deserves proper build!
Yep, it is a nice frame - the only real flaw is the home made crimp in the chain stay - probably made to clear a double chainset.
After sleeping on it, I'm definitely going down a rebuild route, albiet a budget one. Thinking Shimano 600 or early 105 for the rear mech and DT shifter, cranks of a similar era. I do have some 600 (fc-6207) cranks which would probs work with a single ring.
Shopping list if anyone has any bits (will repost in wanted)
Brake calipers, Shimano
Rear mech and DT shifter, Shimano
Bars - looking at something like a shallow drop profile airwing or similar.
Wheels - maybe Mavic CXP33 or old cosmics?
I'm building this with a mindset of getting it functional and reasonably correct without being anal about it. -
This is what happens when you have an unexpected day off;

Picked this up today from JD (thanks!) and it looks like it's going to fit properly.
For now I'm going to build it up basically like the image - frankenbike fixed using spares. Eventually, I'll get some bullhorns/pursuit bars, rear mech, cassette and wheel etc. and turn it into a 1x5 (6?) the way I think it was intended to be.
Lining it up next to my other bike, pursuit bars should be at a similar level to my drops on the other bike and the reach is a tiny bit shorter so there's room to adjust as I build it up. Really nice little frame and quite light too.

If I was to post a link of something I wish to buy from Ribble and then click that link - will that give a kickback to the forum?

Thanks tommmmmmm, I bought a Shimano RS501 30mm wheel set from ribble. I'll use these until I find a good condition set of mavic cosmics in dark anodised like this:

Or I'll go modern, wide rims like flo30/60... maybe
It's going to be a bit of a bodge for the moment. I'll be running a single ring up front and an 8 speed cassette on the rear but I'll set it to only use the bottom 6 or 7 so as not to cross chain too much.
Like I said, I'll get it running before getting the details right.
