Create and Unipack aren't doing anything new or shocking by producing cheap singlespeed/fixed gear bikes, they are catering to a market.
Mechanical_vandal, I get your point, and if all they were doing was producing cheap bikes that would be fine. Yes, people would still take the piss, but there would be nothing wrong with getting one to start with.
The problem is that, based on people's experiences here, they are downright dangerous. We have regularly heard stories of mechanical issues, such as chains snapping, which if they happened at the wrong time could seriously injure or kill someone. Yes that can happen to any bike, but it seems to happen a lot more with these bikes.

This will be a slow paced social ride along the River Lee, starting at Victoria Park, and going up the canal as far as people want to go.
Starting place will be East's pub in Victoria Park.

And of course if people are up for it we can just cycle back.
As it's all towpath, a lot of it is fine gravel or paving, but some of it is tarmac as well. I've ridden there many times on my fixed with 23mm tyres, it's fine, but bring whatever bike you think is most suitable.
Between the possibilty for stopping at the various nice pubs along the river, and the fact that we will have to be considerate to other towpath users this is not going to be a fast average speed, so bring your sunscreen, some beers, and enjoy the day.
The usual rules apply, make sure to bring equipment to fix punctures, nothing too unusual unless you are capable of fixing it, etc.
There is no point doing this unless the weather is nice, so if it's crap on Saturday I'll move it to the Sunday, or if it's crap both days move it to another time.

Don't cyclists always have to give way to pedestrians on the towpath?
And maybe have a permit too....Officially a permit yes, but no-one ever checks, but yes you have to give way, and to be fair it's not unreasonable.
Horatio, you can go up the Lee all the way to Hertford (maybe beyond, it's as far as I've got), it's a nice ride, and then the train back at the end of the day.
Also I did it on my fixed with skinny tires last summer. Most of it is gravel or paving slabs, rather than tarmac, but it's fine. I was actually thinking about organising a social ride there at some point.
The only thing you have to watch out for is a few sections where they put rows of bricks standing up in the tow path in to stop you cycling, there is one somewhere after victoria park, and one just after Lee Rowing Club in Stamford Hill. You can ride over them, but they will fuck up your wheels.

someone was telling me that if your overtaking on the curbside then its your fault if an accident occurs,
As far as I am aware it's against the highway code for any vehicle to undertake (as it's called). Of course all cyclists do it, so you are unlikely to get in trouble for it.
Personally, I never undertake large vehicles. When it comes to cars I only undertake if I think I won't get stuck in the blind spot, otherwise I overtake.

Columbia Road's alright for a knock around, but is a bit too small for team play in my opinion. Also: No seating/spectating bit and it gets used a fair bit for basketball.
I just thought it's a nice open area, and lots of people around when the flower market is on, you might get more people interested. I remember someone saying they had that sort of thing in New York and Paris, where lots of people will just walk past who wouldn't normally see it.

Urgh, I hate freewheel so fucking much, I have to get a new hub asap.
I just cycled back to London, and it felt so wrong. It took me about 10 minutes to get over the instinctive resistance to coasting, but I hate the fact I can't just let the pedals push my legs, hardly applying any pressure, but keeping the same speed, instead just accelerating and decelerating, and ending up doing a sort of half coast where I pedal slower than the wheel, but not coasting either. Also I felt a complete lack of control, which just ended up with me going slower.
Once I get my new hub I am never riding freewheel again if I can avoid it.
Can someone edit the thread title, so that the date is in the proper format, I keep forgetting about it, because it's not in the upcoming rides list.
