The problem with designing a scheme that you ban cyclists from is that they will use it, anyway, and as their use hasn't been 'designed in', this will often create greater hazards, e.g. like the one you outline--had cyclists been considered, the scheme should have taken a different shape.
Hmm, I see what you are saying, and I agree, but is it not possible that they were considered and a reasonable solution could not be found? Obviously I don't know.
The idea that cyclists will do what they want, and rather than change their behaviour the rules should be changed doesn't sit entirely well with me, but maybe that's just reality.

Dunno where to post this.....

At least it's rustproof, so the thief can't pour water over it and wait for it to rust through.

Sorry, I meant that as cyclists will constantly be using it (as the restriction makes no sense whatsoever), they'll be able to make periodic spot checks (as they are doing), but not be able to consistently enforce it. I should have said "unworkable" again, as above.
Well, they could stick a policeman there night and day to guard it if they wanted to.
This sort of pointless restriction
I don't think it's entirely pointless. Without knowing the official reason, it is a very narrow lane, and with the constant oncoming traffic on the other side, mixing buses and bikes there creates potentially dangerous situation, as it's almost impossible for either party to overtake safely.
Of course everyone could just wait their turn and not overtake, but that's unrealistic, so forcing cyclists to take the very minor detour around high holborn seems sensible to me, if it reduces the chance of accidents on that section.

who do you bank with then? make sure you have no connections to "unethical" dealings? puh-leez, even riding a bike is contributing to environmenal degradation from the mines and energy required o extract ore, your supermarket exploits cheap labour, your clothes are made by children, your computer uses rare metals from mines that would raise an eyebrow on the face of the hardest businessman etc etc. get over it.
+1
Not only do I not have a problem with the sponsership itself (I would happily take the McDonalds Central line, or go shopping on a Nike branded Oxford street, if it made those things better/cheaper), or who the sponser is, I am a lifelong Barclays customer. I couldn't give a fuck what they do, I just care they give me good service, and low levels of interest on my debt.

What about a couple of polo exhibition matches over the weekend, with the chance for people to have a go on a couple of spare bikes?
Obviously, not in the stall itself, but don't these things usually have an exhibition area?
good call, if do-able that would be amazing.
Also, what about a special t-shirt which is exclusively available (for subscription/donation) at the show, to encourage forumengers to come down too (obviously sell any extras afterwards through the forum.

I think you've summed it up. I'd say probably a polo bike, a track bike, and a full on hipster trick bike, just to cover all the areas of the forum. And as you say represent the cottage industries that are built around forum members, such as Belk. Maybe organise a competition, with prizes, see if any of the fixed shops will donate things, gets them some publicity too.
I guess the core question is what are you trying to achieve from it? it's not like the forum is selling anything as such.
Out, I'm not here that weekend.
I'm not sure if it's happening anyway...
