John, I think it's great that you're passionate about polo and are vocal in all of the polo threads.
Cheers, I have no interest in just turning up and playing, if I'm going to do it I want to get involved.
Please consider however that a lot of people have been doing this for a very long time, and there might be factors in all of the facets of polo that you may not be aware of, and a lot of history in the organising of these sessions and the community, that went on long before you joined.
I have been reading this subforum for far longer than I've been playing, but yes, I realise there are many things I know nothing or little about. But at the same time that doesn't mean I can't give my input and suggestion, though of course nobody is required to listen to me, or agree with me.
As I said, do what you have got to do. If your sessions interrupt my hard work at getting beginners sessions going, we'll talk about it then.
I have no intention of organising anything without your blessing, certainly not to the detriment of the current sessions, but at the same time if demand is there, and people can benefit from it, then I'd like to try it, even if it's just a one-off.
Maybe next spring will be a better time to attempt that though, with the league there will probably be enough polo in shitty weather this winter ;)
On a related note, I've taken part in, and organised many different sports, and the one thing I really miss in polo is structured training session. Throw-ins are all very well, and I've learnt everything I know in them, but apart from a couple of games of bottom-bracket, I've not really done any skills based training.
I'm not really sure, how, or when this would be possible, but in an ideal world I would like a session, or part of a session, dedicated to practising different skills, for example dribbling round cones, shooting practice, goal keeping practice, set plays, etc...

John H, for what I've seen so far, you are more than ready to step in & play at any Polo session/day, no need to set up more beginners, just ht*u the first times because you got the skills
It's not that I can't, I have done plenty of times over the summer, it's just if I'm going to play 4 times a week, I wouldn't mind some easier games for two of those, just to get some ball time, as one of things I need to work on is ball control, but I guess I can also do that by myself.
Wicksie and Khornight, you make good points, and you are probably right. I'm not going to rule it out, but I'll see what happens.
-
To my mind I would say it's fairly obvious this would have a detrimental effect on these sessions. We've already established that there aren't enough beginners for more than one session.
Have we? When I've been the last few times there have been 15ish people...
Anyway, I don't want to step on anyone's toes here, I just want to play more polo, with souths on wednesday, and downham at the weekend, I rather have a slightly lower level session than go to NE on thursday too...
-
My concerns are that there are not enough people to have more than 1 session at the moment. If this gets saturated I believe it will be to the detriment of all sessions.
And I agree, but there is only one way to find that out. If it does affect attendance on tuesdays then I wouldn't want it to continue.

Ah c'mon, estate agents aren't that bad. I had very good service off a company called Foxtons. They have really snazzy offices and drive these wonderful little Mini's.
Salt of the earth.
Not going to be popular here, but I was really happy with the service I got from Foxtons. Maybe I just got a good estate agent. He very quickly knew what I wanted, He showed me 6 places, I made an offer on three of them (and got the third one). And in terms of selling my old place they piled in the viewings, I must have had about 30 in a couple of weeks.
Also I loved the free drinks, even when I came in just to drop something off.

@max, but if we made the league a little longer started it later, the extra light and days would more than compensate for any congestion...and we'd all be better in tournaments.
10 month league, with a break for the summer tournaments?

I would be interested but I don't even think I could class myself as a beginner yet, only played twice down in camberwell. I'm based east though and I want to play a lot of polo over the next 6 months.
Where do beginnner types play at the weekend?
Well, the only beginner session is on tuesdays, though I have been considering starting an easts beginner session on another day, such as thursday.
Weekends are usually at Downham, with the big boys...
Anyway, regarding the league, next time all three of us are at beginners, lets hope pot luck, or some creative shuffling ;) , gets us into a team together...
-
So, Venn and I want to enter a team into the league, is there anyone looking to play in the league this winter? We are both relative beginners, having both started last summer.
Ideally we want someone who is based east, but we will consider anyone.
So if there are any beginners out there who want to play lots of polo over the next 6 months, please let me know.

There is a Vedett branded Cement mixer visiting the cafe on Saturday night at about 6pm. We suspect that it will be driven by scantily clad ladies in hard hats. While it's here Vedetts are 2 for 1. The first stage of the Vuelta starts at 8:30pm and will be on the big screen.
Damn it why am I away, sounds like a perfect pre-bridges ride meet.

Wicksie, the East Van boys left some mallets at mine for me to do what I want with. They're too short form me, so thought i might as well donate them to beginners polo...they're not perfect but atleast someone new can use them. You wanna grab sometime soon from NE polo?
Wicksie, if you need to I can grab these and bring them sarf, as Downham is just down the road from me...

And up to now it was the only way to learn, doesn't mean it's the best way. You don't see professional sportspeople learning their sports through just playing better people, they learn through hours and hours of training every week.
Anyway, that's beside the point, as there is no other option at the moment.
That's exactly what I want, so I'm in.
