Is the effectivity of a magnet only changed by distance or by the intermediate medium (air, wood, tile etc) too?
I want to stick a soap holder to a wall with a magnet hidden behind a tile, but want to know it is going to work beforehand. I dont have a spare tile, but could replicate the distance in MDF)

Yes. Give it a go. I've been making frames for a while. Careful measurement of length and angles and you'll be ok.
You might want to router a channel into the back for whatever backing you want to use.
