Good point well made, but with people riding for recreational (i.e. exercise), that'd enforce the view that bicycle are merely for exercising/racing purpose than a useful transport for general utility.

it's all too often I kept seeing cars with expensive Trek (no other than) on the roof in California, less so in London.

Most bike shops would shut overnight without recreation users and mountain biking (or sales of for the wrong use) had kept the industry afloat for years and that is not a to b use.To promote cycling as an eco friendly form of transport we need much more investment in cycle paths.I am lucky enough to live in a rural area where the roads are not to congested but we need more done here to encourage cycling to school etc .We have been trying to get an old railway line upgraded to a cycle path for years but it keeps getting put back and our wonderful tory mp says he supports such things but wont push to get it built
