I think that you gotta bear in mind you can still buy them new (unless vintage is important to you).... sometimes the bidding wars on ebay go above retail price which seems a bit silly.

Just got one off ebay the other day, they are quite gorgeous, definatley worth investing in.

Whether or not my bum can adapt to it is another question entirely...

I think that the main issue is that they lack the necessary opposable thumbs to fit the things.

I see a gap in the market here so what we need is some extensive research into the needs of Goldfish in general. An equally important side project is to develop some sort of fixing system that will be suitably easy for them to operate so that even the female goldfish are able to fit them. If we can corner this market then the profits from the subsequent sales can be used to expand the range of products for different types of fish as a Pike will have completely different requirements to a goldfish.
