I rocked some Bontrager Hardcases in 700c x 28 which were fine, but a bit slippy in the wet! I didn't really like them, but still have one on the front!

If you are skidding, don't buy anything under a 28c as they will be too thin and will not take a lot of skidding. Also cyclocross tyres are good.

Yeah, guess it's going to be a trade-off, I like 25c at high pressure, nice and fast on the roads... although prob shit for skids. Might just get a set or Gators and go easy on the skidding.

30 miles really isn't that bad - sounds a bit daunting, but once you get in a pace you'd be surprised how easy(ish) it is.
