Up to say the mid 50's most touring would have been done on one gear or a 3 speed. Luggage was carried in a saddle bag. I think there's an article in the CTC magazine about riding through Albania in the 30s...
all done on one gear.

More gears let us carry more kit , some times I am not sure that's been a good idea. Though I 'd not want to return to 1950's braking.

In my neighbourhood and at a junction I cross regularly. I think the riders ok. The whole story seems to have gone viral as my daughter in Canada has been telling me about it...

If you are interested I ve some slicks( Kojacks) , cantilevers and a period 130 mm stem..

That lever might not work with the brake as it looks like its a cantilever brake lever. A V brake won't be happy with that.

Still here and being removed from else where

Now reduced to £215- a perfect audax, tourer commuter etc .... I ve longer stems, its got a 9cm on at present and other bits you might want.

Don't worry, if you have got this far you can do the cabling

Make sure you have the right tools and measure twice and cut once. Perhaps don't tape up the bars or put the cable stops on until you are happy
And get some protectors for the frame where the cable might rub...

Did you go up Toot Hill and through Ivy Chimneys? There are all in the Essex Alps..

I think you rode out via the Epping new road so may have missed them,, In furture, turn left for Theydon Bois . More hills and less traffic..

On the whole I prefer flat bars for town riding

The Blackburn should be perfect. I once had such a set up. Rock solid, provided you bolt it on properly...

and of course Spa- for the very, very old school tourer...

You can get "attachments" to bolt on a low rider rack to that type of frame.
The bike is older than the Low rider design. Before low riders you would have used an alloy front rack that really just a smaller, squarer version of the rear rack. It was attached through the mudguard eyes and the brake bolt.

You might be able to find some thing like that on the SJS site. Blackburn may do them still..
