Re Eileen Sheridan
There is some you tube footage of her doing the 100mile record, which was run on a course from London to Norwich or up what would be the A11 and then the A12,
I think the film of that run explains her set up. She seems to have rode mainly on the drops to get a flat back.
If you read " One more Kilometre and we are in the Showers" by Tim Hilton, which I am amazed none of you mention, then there is a chapter on women and post war distance record breaking . Eileen and others feature in this

Well in the end it was Edmuduro & co on a tandem and I who set out.
We expected rain and winds ; but none came. The sun even shone on our return journey.
Spotted JD there who was doing some business . Not as good a sale as in previous years and perhaps lacking a little in atmosphere. What I think was missing was the feeling of it being a winter reunion or a equinoxal gathering of East London & Essex's cycling tribes.Ah well , there's always next year; its always a good ride out there and back.
BTW - we also disovered that there is going to be a Jumble held in Muswell Hill on the 21st of January....

Route details
Its about 15 miles to Navestock from Whipps Cross
We will go out via Woodford Green , drop down to Woodford Bridge and then ride up to Chigwell and then along Chigwell Row. From Chigwell Row its down to Stapleford Abotts and then up the Ongar Road to the Navestock Turning. Some of you will remember this bit from LEL 1 when we went to the secret bunker.
This is bit of road will be a bit muddy is crumbling at the edges, so thats where you need 25mm+ tryes.
Then its across the River Roding for the 3rd time that morning and up to Navstock Side for tea , cakes and bargains galore!Should be there by 10 and I' d imagine we will head back about 11.

I've been there. Get your cyclo cross tyres out its going to be icy slippy and a few bruised bottoms from sliding round the sharp icy corners!
Did you ride up in January ? It was the morning of the tweed ride, it was a bit of a hairy ride
Unless we have snow then it won't be as bad as it was that morning.

Yes, good ideas
Please go for the unpopular but needy causes . GOSH and other Children's Hospitals tend to get swamped with offers at xmas.
Also, and I don't want to come over as an investment philantrophist here , but its worth checking out if the charity or cause we are making a donation to can cope with the gift. -

Glad to see this thread is calming down a bit
I was worried we were heading for a bit of class war here ;
i.e middle class and middle aged fixed wheel hipsters V the chav bike jacking hoodies of Hackney.Mind you. like G2G I think I ve been sized up as a possible opportunity by some of the above.
East London's not that bad , that said as some one whose lived in it since 1979 it is now a more polarised place . You used to get medical students and nurses living on some of the estates you ve identified . I doubt they live there now.
Oh & BTW , crime has been decreasing ..........

Hi
See below, did people know about this? I think one of the speakers, Andrei Morgan, has done Phd work on this.
See also the follow up on the 10th@ the House of Commons.
Monday, 9th November, from 1230-1400, there will be a seminar at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine that is open to the public and will include the following presentations:
1) Families bereaved by road traffic crashes (Phil Edwards)
2) Deaths of cyclists in London (Andrei Morgan)
3) Do 20 mph speed zones reduce casualties? (Rebecca Steinbach)
The recently published TRL research into London cyclist fatalities covered only 2001-2006 while I believe Andrei Morgan's presentation covers more recent years. Phil's presentation is on the economic impact of road deaths on families.
This seminar marks the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims and is co-hosted by LSHTM's Nutrition and Public Health Intervention Research Unit (NPHIRU) and RoadPeace. It will take place in the Lucas Room, LSHTM.http://www.lshtm.ac.uk/location/I would also like to ask you help in getting your MP to attend a meeting to learn more about what can be done to reduce the threat from lorries to cyclists.
On November 10, from 4-6 pm in the Grand Committee Room in the House of Commons, there is a meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Justice for Road Traffic Victims, which RoadPeace coordinates. There we will launching a guide for bereaved families of cyclists killed by lorries. This guide is based on cases in London and was produced by RoadPeace, LCC and CTC with help from Leigh Day and Co.
At this meeting, we will also have the LSHTM presentation on cyclist deaths in London, a presentation by Metropolitan Workshop, where one of the victims worked, and what they are doing to and Lambeth on their HGV driver training programme. We would be grateful if you could email your MP and ask them to attend this meeting and learn about these initiatives. -
