If you don't want to replace the chainring then I'd get a 19T, gives about 73 GI and 19 skid patches.

If you're wanting to replace both then you can't go too far wrong with a 49 tooth chainring and a 17/18/19 sprocket.

Pick your knowledgeable brain if I may? If there's no way to fit a ceiling centrifugal fan (4 inch dropped ceiling with solid concrete above) what would be the next best thing? Add to this that the bathroom in question isn't attached to an outside wall.

As long as the full thread is in the wooden frame and it's been drilled to correct size I really wouldn't worry at all. I have hung all my bikes from these at some point the heaviest of which is well over 10kg.

Aye, that's understandable, I'd want to do the same and cold-setting to 135mm shouldn't be difficult when you come to do it.

With that in mind I'd probably go through it in this order:
Double check the hanger.
Get a stepped ferrule, without it sitting securely you'll always have subpar shifting.
Check the limit screws.

I got one a couple of months ago and I'm very pleased with it. Fits well, stitching is good. Would definitely recommend.

There could be a couple of things leaving you with problems. Firstly is that that the indexed shifter has a very slightly different pull ratio to that which is required by the mech which is why you're only experiencing some of the difficulties at the top and bottom end of the cassette. It's been a while since I've worked in a bike shop but cheap plastic thumbies were notorious for being awfully stiff at the top push.

Without seeing the cable outer length it's difficult to say for certain if it is long enough but if it makes one smooth curve from one end to the other and sits neatly in the boss/adjuster at each end then it's probably fine.

Does the penultimate ferrule sit in the braze on, or is the ferrule too big and so is sitting outside and on top of it so to speak? - This would have a significant impact on shifting accuracy.

I'm sure you've got it covered but the H/L screws should only just engage enough to prevent over-shift into the frame/spokes, if the L screw is set too far it will make the final push to get in to the largest sprocket even more difficult.

If you exhaust these possibilities or just don't care you could indeed swap to a 7 speed screw on block and get a matching 7 speed shifter and mech which would definitely all work together so any problem would be with cabling.

Oh one other thing that you could check just to be certain is that the mech hanger isn't bent.

Needs a would buy list.

Perhaps a Kickstarter and proceeds could go towards getting it welded properly or medical insurance. #teamjdmitch

If you're thinking you'd like to move to the Inters session it's a good idea to keep an eye on when the accreditation sessions are (none currently listed as far as I know) as they seem to fill up very quickly. You might get lucky and be able to turn up on the day to take a non-shower's place but obviously there's the risk that there are none.

Had to have a quick search for the first one to see more of it, it's rad as!

If you're going to change chainring I'd heavily suggest a 49 or 47 over a 48 for getting maximum skid patches with pretty much any rear sprocket. 49x19 is nice and spinny, easy to skid and tonnes of skid patches when you do. As @Murphys_Law said though it's all personal preference.
