Yeah there's not a lot you can do about vehicles carelessly or deliberately overtaking from behind. I had a minivan do that to me last week (first time in over two years commuting) - it passed on the corner, hard on the gas, cutting close in just as we reached the apex of the left turn. Fortunately it's a rare occurance but you can see how it could very easily be fatal - it's a matter of inches.

Trundled to Brighton with some first-timers. Nice day for it.

The first hills were just south of Croydon. Short, super steep descent ending in a hairpin http://goo.gl/maps/78EM. Fun!

Ok that's the third time my cranks have come loose while riding. At least the NDS crank arm didn't actually fall off this time..

Do I just need a bigger hex key to torque it up or is something seriously wrong.

One of my Speedplay "light action" pedals has developed some lateral play, ie the pedal platform slides along the spindle. Just 1-2mm but it's enough to make that side feel a bit wobbly sometimes. Is there an obvious fix for that? Will the pedal explode like a box of springs if I open it up?
Alternatively, does anyone in London service these things? They haven't been re-greased for over a year either.

I heard someone giving the cake lady a hard time at the first stop because they got lost, wtf? We didn't have any trouble but it would have been nice to have some unambiguous THIS WAY HOME signs for the return leg. The course crosses over quite a bit and if you weren't paying attention you might go off for some repeat laps.
Really nice route. Good quality roads, good climbs and beaut scenery.

6 hours on the TT bike and I ate:
4 toast, a coffee, multivitamin and 400mg ibuprofen before ride.
4 Powerbars (2 caffeine)
1 Powergel (caffeine)
2 small banana
2 800ml Go 8%
2 500ml Go 8%
= approx. 1919 calories (320 per hour)
Not criticizing, but I heard of a study a few years ago about the use of NSAIDs before hard training or race events. They found that something like 90% of triathletes were taking it before the start for pain prevention during the event. I seem to recall there were some findings about side effects and efficacy compared to non-users but I can't find that online right now. It was pretty interesting anyway. -

I've taken to yelling at pedestrians who step out with their eyes closed / talking on mobile / fumbling with purse / staring in the opposite direction to oncoming traffic. I genuinely felt bad about the woman I scared half to death near shepherds bush market but goddamn it was her or me and I'm not going to hospital for someone else's negligence.
