Common sense is a myth.

I mean to one guy common sense is waiting for a amber or green light before moving through an intersection. To the next person common sense is to just go as long as there's no cross traffic - no harm no foul. And to another person it's to just not stop in the first place, never been a problem before. Everyone will say what they're doing is "just common sense".

^^ Yeah I appreciate that. I just think of it as the pedestrian owns that piece of road until they reach a curb or refuge. Same way we don't like a taxi cab trying to share a bus lane with cyclists. Perhaps if they had 2-3 metres buffer instead of 1 they wouldn't even notice you.

IIRC you're not supposed to pass the front vehicle if it's waiting at a crossing because of visibility. Someone could be crossing right to left. Goes double if the vehicle is a HGV or bus. Not buzzing "behind" someone going left to right is just common courtesy.

Were those feed bags at the start of the climb legit or did the teams taking them cop a penalty?

Besides often blocking the ASL entry point and the odd fast pass, motorcyclists are generally the most sensible road users in my experience. Awareness of vulnerability combined with education perhaps? Scooters on the other hand seem almost as feral as cyclists..

How far is Darsham from Dunwich? Do i book a ticket beforehand or time up and pay?
6-7 miles. I imagine you could buy a ticket on the train since the station is likely to be unattended. No machines either. May be more spendy than buying in advance though.

Train was ace last year. Doing it again this year.

The online booking thingy doesn't let you reserve a bike space but I'm sure it'll be fine. Usual deal with trains, absolute worst case you whip the wheels off and call it luggage. I seriously doubt that will happen but either way you'll get back to London.

No doubt it's been done before, just be aware of who you're riding with and be safe always. Do expect a group of hybrids to hit their v-brakes without warning right in front of you. I don't remember any long steep descending but probably a few short drops and definitely a lot of rolling ups and downs toward the end.

Mate, any chance you could just fit a brake for 1 day? Think of it as extraordinary measures, for the safety of everyone on the ride. 100+ miles in the dark on no sleep, surrounded by randoms.. give it some thought eh :)

Last year they ran a single special train from Darsham with extra bike spaces (20?) instead of the usual 4. Only half a dozen people took it. Not sure if they're running it again this year but I'm going to chance it.

Looking like an excellent group! Does anyone have experience of dropping their car at the beach for transportation back? I'm very tempted to do that...

We dropped a car at Darsham station in 2011 and drove back. To be honest it's a terrible idea - driving in that state is really uncool (with hindsight). Don't do it.
