I saw the opposite of that today, green frame coming up the northernline road, SS with only front brake... is that the ss equivilent of going brakeless except without the excuse of being on the way to a track? WTF?
(by the way he had a flip/flop but no cog on the fixed side)I had brake cable fail yesterday so road home brakeless... fucking scary. I assume people that choose to go brakeless don't go down any of the hills that I do!?
I saw a Peugeot single speed locked up outside Tesco opposite Cantelowes skatepark in Camden with only a front brake. I didn't know whether they'd been scammed by somebody or whether they were trying to be fashionable. Either way, I wouldn't be so stupid!

hi new here,
cant start my own thread yet so am posting here!
how hard is it to build a bike from scratch with no experience?!
i hope its not too hard, i'm gonna do ot anyway......
cheers
I think I'll talk to you on every thread you post on!
Have you ever built bikes before? Do you know what you're doing with them? If not the Sheldon Brown is the man to ask about pretty much anything bike related!
http://sheldonbrown.com/
and here's the link for the fixed gear page:
http://sheldonbrown.com/fixed/index.htmlI've been meaning to post my Peugeot on here anyway, so here it is!
This is how it was just after I'd converted it to fixed. The only thing's I've changed are the bars, seat, tyres, pedals and adapted the rear wheel:

Then I got new forks, stem and headset:

And I've fitted a front brake the old BMX way so that I can barspin:

I think it's cost me less than £100 including putting new tyres on. I did although have quite a few spare parts already from other bikes, so bars and things were free to me. I also did all the work myself, so didn't have to pay a mechanic. I hope you would be able to do your own bike, you get such a good feeling from it when it all comes together, but don't risk ruining a perfectly good bike if you're not sure. There are plenty of people on here that will be very happy to help. -

hey,
new to the forum...have had a recent 'thing' (bordering on fetish like lol!) for single speed bikes.
hoping to build one from scratch...havent a clue how to go about it but i cant wait none the less....have been on ebay lookin for some frames buthavent really found anything suitable to my budget at least
ps that bike below is pretty nice/...not so sure aout the bubble...def wouldnt be able to pull that off
The bubbles are awesome! But never mind...
What is your budget. Realistically. How much are we looking at for the whole build? Also, it's not going to be immediate! I had a very similar feeling to you and just really wanted a fixed gear.
You have two main options, you can either:- Buy a new track bike such as a Fuji Track, Bianchi Pista or Charge Plug. Priced around £300-£500 if you shop at the right place
or you can: - Buy an old road bike that has horizontal (don't have to be perfectly horizontal, just in that general direction) and then replace or adapt the rear wheel. You could probably do that for around £100-£150 if you get a couple of good deals.
Feel free to ask any questions about my build. I took option 2. and went even cheaper, but some people will frown on some of the set up options I've made.

I can now list a few tricks I can do, thanks to getting help on the rooftop last night :-)!
I am now getting the hang of wheelies and feeling more confident of them. Starting to get no handed wheelies, landed barspin wheelies and finally learnt how to skid properly!
Things to work on will be:
- trackstands (really not good at them, only about 20-30 secs with plenty of wobble!)
- longer wheelies, including one handed, no-handed and other tricks included
- opposite foot skids
- backwards circles, and anything else backwards
- riding my bike like a unicycle (refer to was superted was doing at TrixieDix last night, which was incredible!)
- trackstands (really not good at them, only about 20-30 secs with plenty of wobble!)

It might be helpful, to other forum readers, to quote people when the post was so far back. It really didn't make sense with what other people are saying currently!

pah. cold? you all need woolly boots like me. and a nice curry.
nice to see the people wot i (briefly) saw. i stopped by on my way back from stoke newington to see if anyone fancied company back south, only to find the last stragglers heading home. ah well.
min ai: what was the name of your photographer fella?
@Fluff, did I meet you right at the start when there were only about 3-4 of us? I ride a white Peugeot. (I've got dreadlocks, might be a little more distinctive than my bike!)
@Rosmal, about: * What time does TrixieDix End anyone?*
I think it must have finished a little earlier tonight from normal, it did seem a little quieter in general (about 25-30 instead of 35-40!). I left at around 9:20-9:30 and there were only a couple of people left. -

Thanks to Mr. Rocksteady's skid tips now I finally can do some proper skids now!
I was exactly the same! I have been riding fixed for about 5-6days now and couldn't get my back wheel to lock up at all, then I was given some simple but solid advice and I was off and away in the land of skid!
Thanks to the Australian guy that was helping me with barspins, I can now wheelie barspin :-D (sorry, I forgot your name already :-S)
Spiffing night all round old chaps, just spiffing.p.s. nice to meet you in person, pajamas!

i managed to 'destroy' my foot earlier on my way home. I'm trying some new clips, and im finding it hard to get used to them. I usually run spds so these are a little different. I think I got my foot jammed between the crank and the chainstay, but it could have been the downtube seeing a my feet are quite wide. Anyway, it hurt like hell and now im limping. I've rearranged events to be able to go to trixie tomorrow and now i might not even be able to get on my bike!
-
If anyone wants post injury hugs I will be there to console any poor hurt people who are too soft to HTFU, thank you that is all.
well that's very kind of you. do i get a pre trixie, post injury, hug for hurting myself today? I'd like to have it at around 8:02pm if it's at all possible? Thank you friendly posters :-)

It's probably on a couple of mm out. It's pretty close. I'm having to use the inner ring on the chainset that I have, so I'm running 42/16 rather than 52/20. I'm just trying to keep the cost down as low as possible, so all I've bought to convert the bike is:
2nd risers = £5
track cog = £12
lock ring tool = £10 (although not really a cost to the bike as it is a tool that will last forever!
1/8 chain = £9
pedals/cages/straps = £7
pair of blizzrd sport tires = £18 ( got them in Sheffield so they're rather cheaper than London!
Total = £61 (inc. tool)Not bad to completely convert a 22 y.o. Peugeot into a fixie!
p.s. although I could do with some new forks that will allow me to barspin
10 hours gone by and I've already got me some new forks :-)

My bad! I did, of course, mean 'what gear **ratio **do you think they run?'
Thanks for the snappy response though.
