One of the keys about the primary position is, of course, that you don't always have to be in the primary position. The point has been made above but I thought I'd pull it out into a shorter post.
Well pulled. I think this can get lost sometimes.
I regularly ride down a 3 lane radial into Manchester, and spend very little time in Primary. What I do is spend alot of time looking over my shoulder, so I know what each vehicle is doing as it approaches to pass me & can tell if they've acknowledged my presence.
This approach (right or wrong) may well be based on my development as a trainer in Cov, not in London or elsewhere, where it's easier to ride in this manner.

Plastic Po-Po here riding in the gutter, with very tired knog's not really making them show up in the dark. Maybe they were working undercover, fluoro and blue PCSO panels didn't help that argument though. Didn't even acknowledge my ting ting and hello as I passed them nice and wide.
Edit - yeah, they were trying to have a chat, but riding single file so front officer was talking over his shoulder all the way. What a mess.

"Why don't you cycle and what might change your mind?"
I've done plenty of 'i'd like to cycle but...' sessions, generally not much use unless there's a specific tacklable local issue that you probably are aware of but just want to draw out of the target audience.
Typically barrier 1 is roads are dangerous, barrier 2 is bad weather. We know and can tell folks the answers to both, however like horses to water you can't make them drink.
Is there owt you can do to get folks out riding with their kids? After work office family ride or something? Pester power from young un's to do more cycling might help.

^ Yeah bunch of loners! I guess I was as guilty as any, was hard to juggle Tri training, work, and riding out - especially as weekends were not really happening for me once I started heading to Manchester.
My BMX track? down the towpath that me and my mates started with a single jump when I was 10 (i'm now 23) it's now been upscaled to the level where no one rides it, which is a shame. Or the skate park in Beduth?
Greyhound is the best pub in the area...and my local, so if you can have a 'rideout' to this area why cant you come play Polo? hrmph sulks
Never made it to your ones, but had heard about them... I mean't the new(ish) pump track at Allan Higgs off Allard Way.
Greyhound is lovely, especially in summer.
Always thought this'd make a nice pint to pint / point to point ride / race... Greyhound Racing.
Edit - another highlight was mine and Steve's treck across fields to get to a pub in Berkswell. Happy days.

I had a quick look last night but didn't post, will now tho. An entry level - Sora - Cannondale costs somewhere 6-800 notes. Assuming it's in good order and not crashed, 250 second hand isn't bad (it's not bargain, but don't feel ripped off). If it's specced higher once you get to look it over, then your deal just got better.

^ Get around locally to The Peace House, Action 21, Bike Foundry, or Youpunkeroo and find an old bike that fits and do it up.
Your £50 fuel today would've gone along way towards one of those - typical price at Action 21 is £35, there's usually some nice 531 frames knocking about there worth much more than what you'll pay for them, often almost as new / unridden.
