What the fuck has he done?? admittedly it's only a Raleigh, but a beautiful one at that in great condition, and then he turn it into a fixed gear bike.
am i the only one who think the bike look already perfect before he touched it with his willy?

Agreed, an example of when not to convert in my opinion

I think metro are still like that, fuck riding to Wimbles and back, I'm alright at burning it round town but long rides rinse me up after a while and day in day out would be knackering. Not that long ago me and a friend considered Kingston to Central and back again to be a pretty big ride.
HTFU = Harden The Fuck Up
Hub cycles is just a workshop so shouldn't be a problem there.

hmmm. h+son for work... i'd advise against it.
theres a stiff build (responsive) then theres stiff ride (uncomfortable). you'll overly fatigue your body just for fashions sake. they'll be very harsh for work and you'll prolly be grumpy and cranky by friday
what circuit you doing? westend? city? westend>city(they still do that???its been a while)
the halo's are good value - heard reports recently (on this forum?) that hub finish is a bit ropey, but had no complaints from the wheelsets or hubs that i sold in prev. job
why not get something budget/durable for work and save up for something fancy for the w/e?
although i'd really really recommend saving and investing into something like phils on open pro's. most reliable messenger wheelset i've ever had. 7 years of work around the world and changed the bearings once. trued the wheels twice (quality of the build)...
its your body and your money - its your decision... we're just here to advise
my 2 cents
Fatigue my body? But I've been taking HTFU pills since reading posts on this forum so fatigue is now irrelevant :)
Circuit? I go wherever the fuck I'm sent at the moment due to things being pretty slow right now, W 1,2,3,8,9 SW,1,2,3,4,5,6,7 EC,1,2,3,4, E,1,2,3 SE,1,2 NW,1,2 You name it really, I almost went on a Brixton to Camden the other day before it got cancelled.
I'm currently using my durable and fuctional hybrid for work at the moment but the poor derailleur's taking a beating, hence this will be my 'nice bike' really and I was considering using it for work.
Thanks for the advice, I'll give it some thought.

200 budget?
88 - rims x 2
50 - spokes (nipples should come with if you get em from a good store) - you checked that madison can supply correct spoke length??? there are big gaps in their stock list...
40 - hubs (wow - where from???) inc lockring
2 - pair of specialized rim tape. bit cheaper than velox if you get for 1.50...
8 - inner tubes x 2
40 - tyres - schwalbe luganos??? i'd be tempted to spend a bit more on a good wheelset though
12 - shimano da sprocket - factor more if you want more than 16t. dont be tight on sprocket cost
(15 - shimano mx freewheel if you cant get one for free)labour - i'd factor 15/20 per wheel. the quality of the build is kinda important. ask your friends, search this forum etc...
i guess you'd be looking at about 270...
as a much cheaper alternative the one on track wheels are gonna be your basic daily use trackwheelset.
if youre on a budget and want durable wheels then consider them...
i've never seen any issues with these with these wheels - i saw a few come into harrys to get the normal true+tension=beer after a couple of months of regular use and the bearings hold up better than comparative formula/sys-ex hubs. no. they are NOT from the same factory. and definately better than surly... then again, i've seen hubs shagged after a couple of months in rainy mcr...
also, what kind of riding do you do? i've chatted with a few folk around the world about the h+son (i personally think they look great) and gotten the general feedback that they'll be stiff (ie not the most comfortable on the road) but not recommended for whacking up and down curbs...
i'd break it down to a form over function debate...
hope thats been of help
Yep, big help thanks.

- I have inner tubes + tyres already so didn't need to factor them into my budget.
- I was pretty much after a stiff ride (good god what am I saying), these will be for my work (courier) bike and I much prefer a more direct feel with the road and feel a bit disconnected when the ride is dampened a bit. I don't do 'whacking up curbs' as I get enough punctures as it is without bringing pinch flats into the equation
- Considering going to this geezer www.thehubcycles.co.uk to get wheels built, 25% messenger discount ;)

I thought you were after this look

For half the price I could be willing to say fuck the look, however, apparently the H+'s machioned section is also anodised black and I'm going for the full stealth bike look, I also had a someone photoshop my originally intended wheelset onto a frame and it would look fucking sweet. Also the money will be coming out of my student loan which as far as I'm aware is given to you solely for frivolous spending...

Save some cash? £106 Planet X track wheelset

Hmmm, really tempting actually, links?
Thing is I was originally going to have a friend do a really nice simple design on the H+Sons rims and I don't think the planet X's have enough space on them. However, function (and price) over fashion seems to be calling to my more rational side. Decision decisions, why d'ya have to go and make me have to make decisions aye?

Buy a freewheel to stick on the hub - shimano / ACS etc.
...and some rim tape (d'oh!)
... and get those hubs roberto is selling instead. search threads started by 'Roberto'.nipples,
inner tubes,
tyres.Oh yeah, got rim tape, tyres and inner tubes.
How much for nipples?
What is the freewheel part called exactly? Thanks for the quick replies too

A newbie question for ya.
I'm looking to get a wheelset built for around £200 and it currently breaks down like this:
H+Sons machined black rims - £44 x 2
Xero/Formula large flange fixed/free hubs - £40
Spokes, black DT Swiss - £50 (25 per wheel is usual right?)What else do I need to purchase? Is it simply a case of buying the right sprocket and sticking it on the freewheel side of the hub (SS build by the way)? or is there more I need to get. Apologies again for noobness

I do not participate in celebrations of the capture and murder of one of England's great patriots and heros.
I shit you not, up until 2 days ago I thought Nov. 5th was about celebrating the fact that Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament, I was crestfallen when I found out it was celebrating the fact that he failed and was caught :(

Well I'm on a budget and something had to take priority so I went for the parts that would contribute to the wheel staying true over ride quality, I'm sure I'll upgrade the hubs soon enough, these are just to get me rolling. They seem to be perefctly functional hubs anyway.
