Hi Kate,
I've got a friend in City Hall who knows who you are from dealings on your video etc. and how dedicated you are. His advice is for the action group to get itself together (i.e. develop its proposals/plans) and then to arrange a meeting with Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor's Transport Advisor, to discuss its ideas for making the roads safer. He thinks he's likely to be receptive (more so than approaching TFL itself) as he is apparently keen to engage with some cycling groups other than just the LCC. So this could be a very timely initiative.
Hope this helps.
This does sound like a good idea, not only because it tallies with what I have been thinking!
IMO what is needed at this point is a champion for this cause in an official capacity, identifying that champion is an important step in deciding the strategy for convincing the champion to take up the cause.
BJ is the obvious choice for many reasons.
Having a target gives definition to what is required at this stage.
We all want to achieve something significant with this, but it is not going to happen in one step.
To me the first step is to gain support outside of our peer group / special interest group from individuals who can bring pressure on those agencies who can affect change. That means London MPs, the London Mayor and local London politicians.
Hopefully not coming over too Bikeradar.

Hippy/DK spot on
The outcome of this meeting is to agree what actions we will take in the immediate future: 2 to 6 weeks
These actions should be achievable by the people on here and not require specialist skills/connectionsIt needs to be focused on HGV dangerous only, We need details of previous campaigns and current road statistics (I can get the latter)
We need to understand what related campaigns are active and pending by other bodies – repetition has massive value at times.A second discussion should take on the longer term issues and take on board campaigns running with Roadpeace. LCC, moving target etc.. but not here. Let’s not mix the two else we will achieve nothing.
Greasy - I have sent you a PM. I have some Dept of Transport stats on the number of pedal cyclists killed, and seriously injured, in London, and the other types of vehicles involved in these accidents from 1994 - 2007. If you email me on address I have PM'd you I can send them to you. Or anyone else for that matter who PMs me.

I ride on the roads round there which you would probably have to use. Or at least similar ones.
I would not want to be on them in the dark no matter how well I was lit - which doing a commute of that distance would probably be unavoidable.
The roads are often 60 mph single carriageways with HGVs & LGVs. A cyclist is pretty insignificant on them at the best of times. I tend to avoid them like the plague in daylight.
The alternative of country lanes is attractive, but again a bit dodgy in darkness - although good lighting might see you through.
But the potential for getting lost is huge and I don't think you would be able to avoid the A roads altogether.
Having looked at Tricity's route, IMO it is fine until you get to the A414. Which is the road I had in mind when I wrote the above comments.
There are some good lanes though through Navestock, Kelvedon Hatch, Hook End, Blackmore, High Wood, Edney Common & Writtle. I would be happy to do a route through those. It is worth a recce.
For a commute you would need to be totally self sufficient as there is not much round those lanes.

From a posting on bikeradar:
*"The woman that was hit by the cement truck is my daughter. Luckily she only suffered a fractured pelvis. She is a very lucky woman. She often has her 3 year old daughter with her...but didn't this time...Thought everyone would like to know. *
I'm in the US and my daughter, husband and daughter live and work in London. She was on her way to work....truck driver never saw her...even after she was under the truck...a witness had to get him to stop. If he hadn't stopped, my daughter would most likely have been killed. Very scary."

If you are concerned about it going rusty why not go and give it a clean & and oil? give it a wipe over with a oily rag should give it some protection, could do it weekly?
Then after a decent amount of time......6 months?...... since you have been caring and loving towards the frame, it will love you like a parent and then it will only be humane to bring it indoors.

I used to work opposite - horrible junction. Too tight, too many lorries.
RIP.
Have added to this, I think I am missing one from this year.
I'm up for a ride - howabout congregating at entry points like Old Street / Shoreditch High Street junction and cycling en mass to Parliament Square blocking in all the traffic in Parliament Square?

I am sorry to get angry but this has really shocked me. Right outside my work. I could still smell the disinfectant they used to clean him off the street at lunchtime.
There was no change of lane - according to the account of the CCTV the man never left the bike lane and there was no turn involved. This is a straight bit of road.
We all know that you can do everything right whilst on your bike, but still get killed. It makes you wonder if it is an indulgence to try and get to work in a way you enjoy if there is a chance you might not get there at all.
Personally I am considering jacking the commuting in and have been since I heard of 4 deaths or serious injuries in the last two weeks. I don't want to leave a pregnant wife and a toddler because I like my bike journey.

don't want to speak ill of the dead, but it's less to do with the authorities, more to do with the ineptly of the cyclist who decided that it's worth the risk of overtaking/passing a lorry.
You are speaking ill of the dead and are an idiot to comment on a situation you so obiously know nothing of.
This is what went on:
"Our cctv caught the accident and according to the health and safety officer who saw the footage there were two lorrys following one another .The cyclist slighty [sic] swerved(not out of the bike lane) and basicly the lorry “hovered” him up and he come out the back."
The cyclist was swerving to avoid raised metal work. The lorry was too close to him to avoid and he went underneath.
How many times have you done the same? Jinked round a drain without checking behind you first.
Have some fucking respect.
cycle surgery take complete payment for the bike before any test ride.
