you should be able to make do with a sewing awl I believe with that you can do a lockstitch and it will allow you to get into hard to reach places too.

you can just about get away with v69 in a domestic machine - more so if its an old sturdy metal one, rather than a modern plastic one....

sail thread - v69 as a minimum.
Hand stitching might be tricky to provide a strong enough stitch - you would generally want a lockstitch (this is made using 2 threads)

I am after some for a second system - looking for something easy to drive (pref > 90db/W/m) and ideally singledriver/dual concentric that isn't too fussy about placement.

So - Tannoy dual concentrics /vintage Goodmans fullrange etc would be ideal but open to other left field speakers :) (Not really keen on b+w, MS, KEF, etc)

Decent old Nikons/leica's etc command a premium still so maybe look at slightly less obvious alternatives:

Olympus OM1 with 50 1.4 and maybe a 28 or 35mm, well made, compact pro level SLR is often touted as being a great choice.

I had a Contax RTS with Zeiss 50 1.4 - beautifully make and with an amazing viewfinder and ridiculously sharp lens.

yes - thats a good point - good shops will have a range of heavy been bag/sandbags to put in so you can test it with an example load.

Messenger bags work best when on a bike (ie leant forward)

A proper backpack with an internal frame and lumbar strap will actually put very little weight on your shoulders - as it should place 90% of the weight on your hips, although it can take a lot of adjusting and trying out to get one that fits properly and actually works as intended....
