Then you were riding without your limits. Ride slower, your back brake could not have possibly helped you in this situation.
I agree, I run a front on my fixed and my geared bike has a rear, which I never use as it's generally jammed with shite. I've never gone over the handlebars except a head-on with a car. I used to ride sports motorbikes and never used the rear brake on those either. The only point I can see of a rear brake on a SS is if your front fails.

I know this is a "cycle to work" thread, but I'm interested to know what people would do if they had to attend some sort of black tie/smart suit event with no chance of getting changed on arrival.
I like to minimise my public transport usage but I think that would be inconvenient enough to warrant taking a bus, tube, or even a cab.
Ideally you need friends dotted around the city so you can cycle to their house, get changed then take a 5-10 minute walk to wherever you need to go (enough time to down a couple of cans? Get the party started early?)
On the rare occasions I get invited to these events, I generally find an excuse not to go. Though I don't mind getting the occasional taxi if I really have to go to one.

Well the flat Cheshire ones will be OK, I wouldn't want to do anything much in the way of the peak district on fixed. You may be able to try some of the easier peak ones with double-fixed or very low gearing. Lycra ain't essential, though the aerodynamic drag of baggy shirt/shorts can piss you off if your going a fair distance.

One for later in the year
56 miles, out via Marple and Glossop, over Holme Moss from the 'easy' side.
Reverse the ride to do Holme Moss from the 'hard' side

54 miles (Out via Disley, back via Macc/Alderley).
Can cut it down a bit by getting train to Disley/Whaley Bridge
Hilly, but of the long drag rather than the oh fuck variety. Includes descent of the Cat and Fiddle, which is about as good as it gets.

bit scared that you consider the wizard to be a "warm up" shit what have i got myself into?!!!
i know quite a few short rides near macc (i usually get the train there so i can ride the beauty for longer)
and in Cheshire for people scared of hills/gears.
A couple of years ago when I was much fitter I suppose it was, the wizard is tough and never gets any easier to be honest. I've never fancied the idea og getting on a train and going straight onto a climb. I've not been out on my road bike in months though, so need to sort it out.

Aye, I could be up for that, as I need to get some hills in my legs as planning to do Ventoux in September. Chorlton velo do some good rides, but they start at 8am and I like my lie-ins these days.

Maybe it's for a remake of The A Team.
