Thanks both, yep, my knees were a state growing up but his seem very noticeable compared to his scar-free-friends. At least he hasn't copied my Terminator period yet when I, waiting for my mum to finish chatting at pick up, was walking backwards along a concrete curb and fell, scuffing an entire side of my face a la Arnie. Bled profusely and had a good few weeks of bubbling scabs. I vividly remember the mix of horror and 'oh for fucks sake' on my mums face when I walked over to her covered in blood.

Yeah, I'm not interested in troubleshooting that. Good excuse for me to look elsewhere tbh.

XLR interfaces...
I've been using a TC-Helicon GoXLR Mini since about 2021. I've never liked it, always found it bulky, complex and buggy but recently it's become unbearable - possibly due to simply changing cable but I can't get it to behave at all any more (powers itself on and off unpredictably every minute or so and when it comes back it's at half input volume so no one can hear me). I can't roll back firmware or update it at all seemingly, not least because TC-Helicon made everyone redundant recently.
I'd planned last week to swap it with a Wave XLR from Elgato but having ordered/paid for an 'in stock' item from AWD-IT they now tell me it's been declared end of life by Elgato and they won't be getting any more stock in. I could still get it from Amazon etc but feel if it's end of life, do I really want to?
I liked the look of the Wave for a big/tactile round dial. No extraneous stuff. Just push it to cycle between functions and turn it up and down according to need. In an ideal world it'd be end of life because they're releasing a Wave 2, but we've had CES and I can't see any other obvious release windows. So what else is out there?
I have plenty of complex sound stuff for work but want a single XLR-in/usb-out with a means of adjusting levels. I'd like it to be small, ideally powered by the USB to keep cables minimal. It's purely going to be used for getting a mic (currently a Shure SM7B) into Windows so @chrisbmx116 can hear me tell him he's doing a good job at PUBG and is one of the best players I've ever seen.
I GUESS it would be good to have some kind of EQ/VST options at the back end so I can make my voice sound convincing when I tell him that.
I don't love the form factor of the scarlett/presonus stuff. It's a bit fiddly compared to the angled dial on the Wave and the physical faders on the GoXLR.
I don't need it to control headphones (Astro A50X).

If that's the bed and it's staying for the long term, then I'd carpet right up underneath.
It is, it is and agree. It probably looks closer from that perspective than it actually is, and we might slide it slightly closer to the window but it'll still be too close for it to feel like a space used for anything other than access to the shelf/window.

What would you call this little roof /rain cover thing for a garden gate - I ripped my gate in half this morning taking the bin out (brute strength, nothing to do with crumbling, rotten 20 year old softwood). I'll try and patch the gate temporarily with battens today but will try and either build or buy and fit a replacement before long. But to ensure longevity this feels like a good idea?
Or just get a metal gate? Or some kind of composite? If the last two, any recs?

Is the phrase 'see a flap, stitch it back' not a real thing then?
Can't book - walk in only. It's definitely dead tissue so we're going to pack a load of snacks and books and set off shortly. That or I take my new stanley blade to it but feel that'd probably end with me on some kind of list.
His knees are such a fucking state. Proper bad dad vibes.

Kiddo fell on a stone last Weds and took a chunk out of his knee the size of my thumb which was hanging off. Went to a walk-in and the nurse applied steristrips to keep the piece in place and then dressing to cover it.
Have changed dressing - first time changing it it looked OK but far from healing. Dressing was due to come off today but the flap/chunk is not looking good. Grey/damp/smells etc. Am thinking it's likely going to have to come off. Going to air it out but def can't see how it's going to knit itself back together. Feels stitches would have been more appropriate than steristrips the first time around given age/activity of patient and state of damage. Neither of us looking forward to another 4 hour wait.

Carpets/capped off fireplaces.
Trying to make kids room more enjoyable to be in, so carpeting over the knackered boards. What's the forum wisdom on old fireplaces? I don't think we're realistically going to be ripping the thing out any time soon. There's a hearth which is the same level as the current boards. Then the little nook into the fireplace itself. Where does the carpet typically end? I had presumed carpeting over the hearth because it's just ugly and a trip hazard for a kid with zero spatial awareness. My wife thinks we should carpet into the fireplace too. To me that seems a bit weird. Any votes for either? Or anyone insist we don't even carpet the hearth?

That's right I crimped a cable. Who wants to touch me.
Spent the better part of this evening attempting to try out the process ahead of getting it all installed this weekend (Klein pass thru connectors). Could NOT get the wires through it. Must have gone through about 50cm of cable. Eventually I tried a different connector from the same packet and it just slid straight in. Compared the two and the first connector was sealed shut. Good quality control from them...

Also, while I'm in there - is there anything else I might want to leave space for in the rack case I build? Switch? Storage? What do people put there?
Kind of want a pull out tray with a keyboard, monitor and one of these: https://www.eastwoodsoundandvision.com/blackmagic-design-cloud-store-max-48tb but prob inappropriate for a living room.

Patch panels.
I want to send 4 x cables out of a router (fritz 7530 ax) into some sort of local panel that sits in the same cupboard as the router adjacent to the ONT. Then I'd like to send those 4 x cables around the house to plug into mesh repeaters. I want the cupboard to be relatively tidy so am anticipating making some kind of housing for it - probably wood. I guess I could buy one but will probably end up making one. Am thinking rackmount with 2 units.
I've seen this which looks great: https://racknex.com/fritzbox-7530-rackmount-kit-19-inch/ but don't really want to spend 175 euros (after configuring it to include extra bita) plus shipping for something that feels pretty simple.
- Any rackmounted patch panel brands that are forum approved?
- I'm using this cable: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Oren-Ethernet-Cable-CAT6-50m/dp/B08RY64L21/ Am I right in thinking if it's unshielded I don't need to connect any ground wire (that comes with a lot of the patch panels I'm seeing) to anything?

I have memories of reading this before somewhere but tableware - just want simplish, probably white/ish, plates/side plates/bowls/pasta dishy things etc. Don't want to spend a fortune BUT: don't want to see plates scratched with cutlery and definitely not fucking chips. What's resilient? Porcelain? Stoneware? I'm sure someone linked some french website in the past. What about trade/resto suppliers? Seeing metallic/grey scratches on white plates is a not so pet hate.

Thanks all - some good bits of info here. From the sounds of it an iPad with simcard and apple watch combo sounds like it'll do most things.
For photos, she's trying to get back to using her actual cameras and then editing photos on iPad. So if she can do banking and WhatsApp on that via a SIM then that'll be plenty. She's got a laptop as well for email and web stuff. Think just during the day she wants to be a bit more present which is fair.
She doesn't do any banking out and about. Doesn't use maps etc. will look into simcard on iPad/whether you can change numbers etc.

Whatsapp...
My wife wants to get rid of her iphone (not because she smashed the screen) but because she spends too much fucking time on it. Which is a fair assessment. She'd like to replace it with some kind of non-smart phone. The bits holding her back:
Whatsapp - we do home ed so there are lots of whatsapp groups which are handy to keep an eye on. Fucked if I'm joining them, so how can she keep up to date? Presumably not possible? (i.e. you can get whatsapp etc on a browser but you need the phone to link in the first place).
Music - she was thinking of using an apple watch and earbuds for music when running but again, presume you need an iphone to set it all up? Small MP3 player instead until buds have 5G streaming or memory function built in?
Banking - presume you don't need a smartphone to do online banking apps on an ipad? Even to set up as they have lots of biometric hardware already?
Her phone goals are: sms (some sort of group function wouldn't hurt)/ calendar / phone. Probably in that order.
I haven't used an iphone for years so am zero help.
Edit: she doesn't have the capacity to just uninstall distraction apps or set timers etc.

Still loving frame.io
Only thing is now I'll actually have to upgrade to pay for the full thing. Had been using the 'hobbled version included with Creative Cloud (only 5 projects, various limitations on sharing/review)' but happy to upgrade as I had an email from Adobe saying my promo price was coming to an end - (I'd been on the 'the threatening to cancel/getting the automated half price offer' dance for the past 5 years or so). This time no such offer. Adios.
Will half heartedly look for a replacement for Photoshop and Illustrator for the sporadic times I need to access something as part of an animation. I use Acrobat a bit as well for invoice/doc review. Lastly occasionally a client will come to me with a PPJ or AE file but can always just get a single month sub and bill to the project.
