ah bugger. just went on what condor said when i went in the other day, though it seemed like quite a good idea. the thread on the hub is what doesn't look quite right. if it's totally stripped will there be nothing left? this is my first (and at this rate the last) attempt at mechanics. wanted to try and learn how to do stuff myself, learn and save cash. looks like might be more expensive this way!

i tightened it pretty well with the chainwhip, was just trying to be safe and get the lock ring nice an tight. problem is cos it's a miche cog with the slot in adaptor thing it looks like you really need the lock ring to hold the cog there. the lock ring isn't spinning or anything and you can't just pull it out along the axle, but i imagine it's pretty dodgy

it was all going according to plan, got a 17t miche cog from condor and a chainwhip/lock ring tool, swapped the cog put on the lockring. rode it round a bit then tried to tighten the lock ring a little more just to be safe in case the cog had tightened more from pedaling... MISTAKE! the lock ring lost resistance and now just keeps turning. so i've stripped the thread right? unrideable? gonna need to buy new hub, so any suggestions? it was just the standard hub that came with the pista. how much does it usually cost to get a new wheel built up? would i be better off using this as a good time to upgrade? help please

hello everyone,
couple of questions,
I want to change the 16t cog on my pista for a 17t, anyone know where i can get one that'll fit? i went to BLB cycle surgery, evans and bicycle magic. they only had 1/18 ones. what's the difference/advantage of the 1/18th track chain and the 3/32? i don't really want to change everything. I wanted to try and change it myself and i gather i'll need a chain whip. is it relatively straight forward?cheers

Been lurking here for a while (love this forum) and realised hadn't made a proper introduction, how rude!
I'm Eddi I just moved to London a few weeks ago and I'm jobhunting (tho I may have something starting on monday) I got into fixed in NYC last year, after being intrigued by it for years. I used to see all the couriers in Glasgow (I went to uni there and stayed for a year after, gonna go visit soon) with no brakes and be very confused about how they stopped. I had a hybrid specialized sirrus which I got cheap off craigslist in NY, this inevitably got nicked but the insurance paid out replacement value ie not what i paid for it, so i got a pista! took a bit of getting used to, learning to skid and skip stop etc but i totally love it. Once i get a job i'm going to start playing around with different parts and things. I want a 17 tooth on the back, a shorter stem and some other bits.
I'm going down herne hill for a try out on saturday, and generally wanted to go out for a few rides, to get to know london a bit and meet new folk.
anyway, rambled on a bit but , hello!

I have said it before and I will say it again:
Human shit on the handle bars and saddle.
do you have a special diet to get the required consistency, not so runny that it slips off and not too chunky that it doesn't stick? do you have a curry the night before if you're going to be leaving your ride in a particularly dodgy part of town?

^ ok eyebrows if you see a tall guy with a beard and a red short sleeve jersey (probably grazed and sweating profusely) come say hi. i'll be on one of their lender bikes. I don't have any bike shorts, not a huge fan of lycra and i don't want to buy a pair just for the day, you think it's ok just to wear normal combat shorts?

i'm gonna go down not sure if i'll ride down from Stepney or be lazy and get the train though as it sounds like it'll be a bit of a killer, my fitness isn't great at the moment, haven't been able to ride since may. who's going to be there on saturday, would be cool to meet some new folk after just moving to London village.

Just been looking into trying out Herne Hill velodrome on Saturday (as this is the only Saturday I'll be able to have off once I start work next week.) Apparently you have to do an induction before you're allowed to ride there, and they only do inductions on saturday mornings. What's it like those who have been before?

Hi all
I've been loitering on this site for a while now and wanted to say hello. This is my first post. When I was in NYC my LBS had a good way to help stop parts getting stolen, they put some kind of epoxy resin in all the allen key holes so you can't take anything off without drilling it out first. It worked for me, using my bike every day for 6 months in Brooklyn and Manhattan. granted didn't have much that people would want to steal (more or less stock pista) obviously you have to have everything set up as you like it, and not really want to change stuff often.
what do you think?
