i built a singlespeed with vertical drop-outs and used a chain tensioner to accomodate the lack of horizontal 'pull'. I love it but i dig that you might not be happy rolling freewheel. (you cannot use a tensioner if you want it to be fixed)
if you have your heart set on fixed then i'm told you can pull it off with vertical drops but your choice of gearing is very limited and still you might not be able to achieve sufficient tension in the chain. This calculator will help - http://eehouse.org/fixin/fixmeup.php
One last option available to you is an 'eccentric hub' - http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/white-hubs.html
good luck

I used to go to some place called the 'Bonnington Cafe' over down in Vauxhall years ago. Pretty sure its a vegan type deal. No menu, just whatever they happen to be cooking that night. I remember it being a pretty cool place. You used to be able to 'smoke' there too. I guess not anymore since the ban. I seem to remember its BYO booze as well.
** edit : yep.. it still exists - http://s208303316.websitehome.co.uk/index.html . go check it out, its unlike pretty much any other restaurant i've ever been to **

theres a very abandoned bmx on bethnal green road, near the tube station. its had a pretty cool metamorphosis over the last months.
- started as a fairly grubby bmx chained to the rails
- got lots of parts nicked, bent, smashed up
- got a new paintjob (in situ), including the back wheel.
- been splash n rained on a lot and could prob do with another touch-up
I think its time it moved onto the next level. maybe it should have some parts added to it now.

really good advise. Thanks so much, I really appreciate it. Always prefer to fix this stuff myself than rely on the lbs so I'm well chuffed i got all these possible leads.
Going to have a good headset adjusting session tomorrow night as soon as i get home. The headset was the one part I didnt install myself so I'm new to all that.
Thanks again.

So I bought a shitty cheap 'Stronglight' headset.
I have a feeling i'm paying for it now though. Annoying really as its the only part on the bike i scrimped on.
Anyway.. here's the issue. Its quite hard to describe without actually feeling it for yourself unfortunately. I can feel a definate 'looseness' somewhere on the bike. I'm pretty sure its around the headset. Its quite hard to tell though, its pretty damn subtle. When i go over rougher ground theres a detectable 'knocking' you can feel through the bars too.
If i lift the rear or front wheel a couple inches and then drop it back theres a tonne of vibration being kicked off from someplace, presumably implying theres a not-so-good fit somewhere on the bike.
I'll prob just take it into a shop and get some other hands/eyes on it but thought I'd ask about here first. Just in case the headset turned out to be a wild goose and there's something more obvious I just dont know about coz i'm all newb n shit.

get a rucksack/backpack/daypack whatever you want to call it. There's a load of em about with special designs to ensure airflow between your back and the pack itself. My Vaude one (http://www.theoutdoorgearshop.co.uk/acatalog/Vaude_Triset_25___4_.html) does a great job.

i dont get all the anti-car stuff that comes from some cyclists. i think thats a bit like being into chocolate and therefore hatin all other sweets. it dont make sense.
i fuckin love cars, i love everything about them. the design history, the sound, the speed, the smell.. the whole package. sure they're prohibitavely expensive and they pollute the air but they're still landmarks of passion and artistic energy.
you get assholes who drive cars, suprise suprise. you get assholes who ride bikes. assholes who walk, assholes who jog.
dont hate the transport. hate the asshole.

Really really fast. The wheels i bought off em arrived less than 24Hrs after ordering em.

This bloke is a twat. Amongst having piss-poor, rude customer service and never replying to emails, he lists shit as 'Buy it Now' when he clearly doesnt have the stock. Wanker.

Weird question.
I just spent a small fortune on a Abus D-Lock. When i got home i tried fitting the 'holster' gizmo to my bike frame, then took it for a test run.
Urrgh.. so noisy. rattles like a bastard on my otherwise nice silent runner.
This is no good at all. Will have to try n return it or investigate alternative techniques. I'm sure the guys in the shop will think i'm a total cock but I really give a shit about stuff like this.
Is this a common problem ? Does anyone have a D-Lok which doesnt rattle ?

in case anyone cares, or happens to run a search for a similar issue. I took the spanners to my headset last night and wahey ! that fixed it :D pesky little fucker just needed a couple degrees and its now tighter than a scot in spandex.
