Amazingly, after I've measured it, the bottom bracket width is 68mm. Which I guess means it's 24tpi
? Felt certain it'd be 71mm/26tpi with it being a 1982 lower end Carlton.Inner ring chainline is 41.5mm, can I get away with running it 1.5mm out from the 43mm at the back ? I'll probably end up with a new bottom bracket at some point in the future though now it looks as though it's 24tpi

@ChrisNW - Thanks for that. Looked it up on the YST website, looks as though they only do 68mm ? Have you seen a 71mm anywhere ?

This bottom bracket shell is now the only thing i am not understanding. I've had the threads checked and they are not 26tpi that raleigh used but, they are 24tpi which was used when carlton was their own company.
All i am unsure of now is what BB to fit. A carlton corsa frame with 120 rear spacing and miche primato track hub (42mm chainline) and sugino messenger cranks. Stated length to use was a 103mm axle.
Being a 71mm BB shell, what approach do i take?!! I can work out everything else with chainline, just not sure which BB will give me the best adjustment. English threads by the way. (sorry if thas obvious)
Once i got this cleared up it's the home straight i think!!!
Let me know how you get on. I've got two Carlton's, a 1959 Road/Path and a 1982 Criterium.
I fitted a Sugino BB to the Road/Path without problems. I'm fairly certain the Criterium is 26tpi though, which means I'm going to attempt to keep the original BB and cranks, and hopefully get away with using chainring spacers to get a good chainline with a System-Ex rear hub

The other option is taking a box of tub tape around with you, and tape the new tub on if you get a flat.
I'd recommend getting a knackered old tub, and practice taking it apart and sewing it back together before you go on your trip. Maybe use a tougher tub as well ?
Bike looks lovely by the way. Going to put Ergo's or downtube shifters on it ?

Ooooh, thought I recognised it. I live about half a mile from Aldersley.
Do you come down to ride at all ? My club does Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights there at the moment (weather dependent). It's road bike/singlespeed only during the winter, fixed will start back up again in the spring. Sessions are open to all if you fancy coming down, and Friday night is probably the best one to start at (8pm for Seniors)

Road race frame? Road racing you spend most time on the hoods or the tops. You're only in the drops when you're smashing it into the wind and sprinting (breakaway, bridging gaps, primes, finish lines).
Don't think because you have drops you HAVE to ride in themI'm the opposite, in the drops for most of the time if i'm racing

In case you haven't found out already, the one downside to using Criterium bars as opposed to more modern bars is that you don't get a flat transition from the tops to STIs or Ergo levers. You can sort of fiddle it a bit, but the bars and levers end up looking a bit wonky.
I find I can't ride on the hoods of my aero brake levers on my Criterium bars for as long as I can on the ergos on my more modern ITM bars. I guess it may be just a case of what you're used to though

Ta muchly, think i'll give the Pave's a go when I need to replace tyres. I fear using the Record is probably tempting fate a bit too much for me.
Edit - Or more probably Pave on the back, Record or Corsa on the front
Edit again - the smiling buddha, you do realise the tyre you've linked too is a tub and not a clincher ?

I get the feeling when I see someone on a full suss special they're doing it because they have to, rather than choice (ie no car for whatever reason).
I don't think the road infrastructure is any worse/better than anywhere else for cycling. The drivers are definitely worse however. They're just not accustomed to seeing cyclists on the road - nearly got knocked off again tonight despite having an epilepsy inducing front light.
I'm not convinced by this. If they where designed for speed I would of thought they'd have a lower spoke count rim and offer a tubular version. It seems like they've got a rim that's halfway between a racing one and a street one
