+1 for wizards, awesome stuff.
send the guy an email, he might be able to rewind you old pickups making them awesome for little money. He can also do crazy stuff like half winding them twice so you can double the impedance at a flick of a switch giving you a sort of booster control.
bit like billy sheenan does with the mudbucker on his yamaha, I have this set up on my eb-0, instant bass doubling switch. awesome.

Thought I'd put up a wanted add for the harder bits to find for my trike project.
What I need is
**Hub gear or wheel
**Quite specific this, but here goes
I need something with quite a decent range - %250 - %300 to get a decent low spinny gear and still some usable other. Also It need to have an internal cable operated brake system of sorts. This brake needs to have a swing arm mount as my frame doesn't have disc brake mounts.
Cheers to the hub/wheel offers I've had already but unfortunately they didn't fit this.
Also I need a rim to go with this - 24" and quite wide. will take some chunky 24"x2" tyres. If anyone has a 24" schwalbe big apple that would be handy!!
**Brake doubling mechanism
**I've seen a few bikes with this clever box of tricks to pull 2 brakes with 1 lever. I've seen a few solutions online but I will be good to see what the forum can muster.
**Saddle and clamp
**I need a comfy saddle that both I and my wife will approve of - she can be very fussy. Also - the tricky bit, I need a clamp to attach said saddle to the seat post. It's the old style connector, I've no idea where to find one of these.
**Handle Bars
**Will need to create something for this but a pair of chopper handle bars would be perfect, or some big promenade bars. They'll be chopped up so nothing fancy.
**BB Cranks Chainring
**Need an english bb and a crankset. This is all kind of dependent upon the rear hub.
**Mud Guard
**Rear mud guard to cover a 24"x2" tyre. chrome would be best but I'm not fussy.
Think that's all for the moment
Big thanks

i'm not a real programmer but I do only know fortran.
Oh and I can use matlab - because it works if you put fortran into it - if you flip the array ordering first
to be honest real programmers write it down on paper and get someone else to enter it. my quiche is signifcantly better than my programming.
Interestingly enough I do know someone who works at the los alamos national laboratory looking at atomic weapons code. He told me that he spent the first couple of weeks there working out how to get round the security systems, so at least that holds true.

Yeah I totally get the no non-academic life experience thing, though I've done enough shit jobs in my time to hopefully have some sort of idea.
I guess having a kid does bring you back to reality a bit. I haven't had the chance to let my research consume me, and I don't have the time to be a complete uni freak.
I've found that having a baby whilst doing a PhD is actually quite cool (well my PhD at least). I'm really flexible so can take a day off (if I catch up later) at odd times to do some child care, and I can work from home a lot of the time. Also my wife is still a student (for another couple of weeks at least) so we're a bit of a tax anomaly. No income apparently.

ok I'll try and out do that
My PhD is focusing on meoscale atmosphere - ice - ocean dynamical interactions at the sea ice edge (or marginal ice zone). The main process I'm investigating is the possible formation of jets of high velocity at the extreme edge and how this will affect the development of the sea ice cover. These jets are commonly found on coastlines.
To this I'm using the Los Alamos Sea Ice Model, altering grids, parameterisation, etc along with my own idealised modelling using a Hibleresque Viscous Plastic nonnewtonian sea ice rheology.
^ boring too

Also since starting the PhD I've had a kid and got married, and I'm still only 23
YouTube - The Specials - Too Much Too Young
perhaps. not planned though, funny the direction life take you in.

I'm sceptical of people who go from undergrad to masters to PhD without any time off (especially in the UK, where programmes are shorter). I find it very hard to talk to those people.
I've done this, not entirely planned as it all seemed to just happen. I also skipped the masters and went straight into PhD. Not really sure how this happened as I've not met anyone else who has done it.
The right project came up when in my final year of undergrad and I just applied and got it. So cancelled the masters and got on with it. I guess it makes me sound a bit of manic academic careerist but I don't really think I am.
Now 2 years and thoroughly enjoying it, and the current field (sea ice modelling - theoretical geophysics if you will) i'm in. Saying this I've not yet started writing up and if the ending is anything like my transfer viva it will be hell. I'm not very good at writing up, I did a maths degree.

cheers for the brake advice, they're not being mounted on forks so as long as everything is cleared at some place it will work. Will check out some BMX brakes too. I'd discounted them as I thought they were all the U-brake sort.
ed don't go breaking the wheel down too early, I've got my eyes on something else at the mo, will let you if I change my mind.

mdcc - the trickiest bit has been done already - got a frame from christiania so all I need to do is connect it all together. bit more framework on the underside will do the trick.
on the lookout for a decent internal geared hub as well if anyone has anything. oh and what's the best way to work out the correct rim size for a frame? got a feeling it takes 24" wheels though want to be sure.

oh and a big thanks to this thread for the heads up on palehorse. caught them last saturday at the windmill, awesome stuff.
