How owls swivel their heads
It's the owl's greatest trick - turning its head almost a full circle.
The puzzle has been how the bird doesn't throttle itself in the process. If we did it, we'd cut the blood supply to our brains and pass out."They haven't developed just one answer to the problem; they have several answers," said Dr Philippe Gailloud from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
"And it's because of this set of solutions that we don't see lots of owls lying on the forest floor having suffered strokes," the interventional neuroradiologist told BBC News. -

Seriously seems you can do pretty much anything in a car and get away with it: Drink Driving + Crashing + Causing a death = 4 Month suspended sentence....
*A police officer who was found guilty of drink-driving after a crash which left his friend dead has been spared a jail sentence.
Brendan Buggie, 39, was handed a four-month suspended jail sentence at Bradford Crown Court today after being convicted of drink-driving.
He was cleared by a jury last month of causing Justyna Stanczak's death by careless driving.
Buggie, who was suspended from Greater Manchester Police following the collision in December 2011, resigned from the force today.
The former officer had drunk around six pints and was between one-and-a-half to two times over the legal limit when he ploughed his sports car into a parked van on the A56 in Ramsbottom, Greater Manchester, in appalling weather conditions.
Miss Stanczak, 26, who was in the front seat of Buggie's Toyota Celica, died later.

in reality people ride proper moped in the bike lanes too, also recently you've been allowed to drive tiny electric cars in the bike lanes, i think they're for the disabled, but they take the full with of most of the bike lanes, and are a pain in the ass... luckily there aren't many of them at the moment....
so, a motoring website says cycling in the netherlands is in chaos... who'd of thunk it...? wonder if they'd propose that all those thousands of people should commute via car?

one of the big differences (from Amsterdam/copenhagen etc) is that the bikes we choose to ride are essentially a fashion/personality statement and not actually designed for commuting, pretty much everyone on this forum will be riding a bike designed for speed, they are sold on the back of the same go faster/compete mentality that cars are marketed to....
From my point of view & experience; i recently brought back from Amsterdam a standard Dutch situp & beg with practical mudguards & cargo box up front which is my everyday bike now. i used to ride a cannondale track.
Now i find that i'm physically riding in a more relaxed and less 'racey' position, i take up more space, i can carry stuff almost like having car boot, and i feel more like traffic, i find myself stopping at reds all the time, and interacting in a less confrontational manner with traffic... maybe its just me, but if you go to Amsterdam everyone rides basically the 'same' bike, it transcends fashion, its just how people commute, there are tangible reasons its better; roads layouts favour cyclists, many roads are one way for cars, both for bike etc...
i would like to believe that if we could only buy 'practical' bikes over here, without being seduced by the allure of racing/competing on the road and there were visible advantages to commuting by bike then we could perhaps move back to the bicycle being the default way of commuting...
