This is going to be a major pain for anyone with a cassette or freewheel block. It's dead easy to say you can just go single speed, but I will need to take a hacksaw to my cassette to achieve the correct gear (I run a 28t). Luckily I know how to do this, and probably have the parts. It could take a number of hours in any case! I expect I'm in the minority though, most will need to throw money at a bike shop and hope they are good at improvisation.
I don't think a 9 speed block presents the same hazard as a single, spare cog. Is that what caused the injury? I also don't think it will be possible to put a spare piece of chain on adjacent cogs, as this will foul on the drive chain.
i totally agree with you john H. Its not going to affect me but im just worried that my team mates wont have time to sort it out. i guess i posted in a huff because of the short notice. We dont really check the london forum much and had chris who came up to play with us yesterday not suggested i check here for the team confirmation then we wouldnt have even seen that this was a new rule.
Just to answer these questions and points, I agree its short notice however its posted all over now and there are few people who run a full casstte so as I said, I will do whatever I can to help. I think its a really important rule to follow as crandal would have bleed out on thecourt if he hadn't been so lucky. The rules are developed to protect us and I think its worth the effort. We make these rules up as we go sometimes and an issue like this just can't be ignored.
I apppreciate the complication, but I feel that as a community we can help each oither sort out any difficulties with modifications and keep everyone safe.
Ps bidou luckily didn't loose an eye but what ben said about protecting others is exactly the point. Safety first! :) -

my team mates run gears! will they have to convert to ss in the next three days considering they will be at work all up until friday with their bikes packed in the car on wednesday night??? Its extremely short notice and as much as i agree with this rule it just seems that perhaps a better solution 'just for this tournament' would be to make shin pads a requirement regardless of how many folk will moan about it. Of course we'll try and comply but thats a big setback for some of us!
Hey Clemp!
I think asking every player (180 people) to buy shin pads versus a few players to single speed their bikes seems unfairly weighted but i agree that it is short notice. However, does your team mate have a cassette or a freewheel? If it's a cassette then its really straight forward and if you can get to a bike shop at home, let your host or someone in London know you need some help when you get here. You would just need to remove the unused cogs in the cassette and replace them with spacers. Are you guys playing the Friday or the Saturday group? Let me know of the set up on the bikes and I will do what I can to help!
Cheers, Nik

URGENT RULE UPDATE THAT WILL PROBABLY AFFECT YOU!!
Hey everyone,
In light of Crandall's near miss at the North Americans, the NAH is putting a new rule into immediate effect that bans the use of any uncovered (by a chain) cog.
This includes secondary cogs on a freehub, freewheels, fixed cogs, unused cogs on a cassette. Taping will not be permitted so it is essential that they are removed.
We understand this is very short notice, however we feel it is important and it will be checked at registration etc. If you have a cog like this and you will have trouble removing it please try your local bike shop for alternatives/help. If you have already arrived in london, ask your host/a local player for help. There are a number of shops that do a same day/while you wait turn around on this kind of stuff including Look Mum No Hands, 49 Old Street, Lock 7 on Broadway market (hackney) and possibly Push cycles in Highbury.
Please try and sort any issues you have with this out before the tournament and if anyone has major issues, PM me and I will do what i can to help nd advise.
Thanks a lot and looking forward to seeing everyone!

RULE ANNOUNCEMENT!!
In light of Crandal ripping his leg open down to the bone in the NAs this weekend a new rule is to be included in the Nah ruleset that will be strongly enforced during the london open.
NO EXPOSED COGS
That means no cogs that arent covered by the chain (freewheel or fixed cogs on you non-drive side or on a freehub and also covers cassettes...single speed that shit!). Sorry folks but your commuter gear has to go! Crandall was lucky not to tear an artery and i think we know what that means...
We understand this is short notice but go to your local bike shop and sort it out. If you have already arrived ask your host/loacl london player for help. We all have to have each others backs!
Cheers
Nik

BUMP!!!
So, there will be 2 volunteer groups on the Friday (not including court building!), 3 on the Saturday and 3 on the sunday!!
Each group would ideally be 5 people.
Responsibilities can be divided depending on what people want to do!
These are the duties:
1.Sales (of t-shirts, beer and possibly saddle danglers!..you will be provided with a bunch of change and a money box and a spreadsheet to fill out)
- Litter and Loos! (yup, checking on the bog roll and bins...lots of all of this will be available to you for easy times)
- Whipping (the coveted role of shouting at people, now enhanced with a microphone and some big speakers!!)
If there are 5 people then no one has to work too hard. I would like to ensure anyone who does this is free to have a wicked time too and will arrange it so you never have to do shit when you are playing. So the more the merrier!!
Groups will work for 3 hours (ish...point being not all day!!)

5.So that's it! I have details of those who have volunteered but if you want to fire your name on when suits best/how many groups you want to work in that'd be cool.
I love that so many people from within and outside of the community have helped so much already with the Open and volunteered their time on the day too. It's gonna be GREAT!!! LPCLPCLPCLPCLPC.....gush etc.
- Litter and Loos! (yup, checking on the bog roll and bins...lots of all of this will be available to you for easy times)

HEY ALL!!
So things are looking exciting! Lots of people are pulling this trophy out of the bag in a very very awesome way right now!!
The trophy is particularly covetous.....
If you have put your name down to ref please check the ref annoncement thread (i spelled it wrong...) and if you offered to volunteer i will have a very nice volunteer shcdhule on the vol, announcement thread later today.
If you havent yet Volunteered but wish to do so, its not too late! Stick your name down on the vol. thread and your team and i will make sure you wont help when you play.
The food and coffee is confirmed for the court builders and Ben-Beagle is making a volunteers lunch on friday!
Thanks everyone! Looking forward to getting the show on the road!

michaelsunday refs will be worked out after the groups end on saturday. the list above should have everyone who volunteered and list you reffing the groups that you arent playing in. if any of this is wrong please let me know so i can make sure we have enough people.
also, bear in mind that we will try to have a time keeper where possible so 18 refs is really more like 9.
cheers!
