Off to a folk night thing at the Harrison in KX tonight. *trepidatious.
I'm a band whose output contains more than a trace of folk but yep, I've yet to go a folk night that hasn't had me cringing myself silly.
Just noticed this at the top of the page. We went to the Folk thing hoping to dig it and charm our way into a gig there. It didn't work out.
It's a tiny room with a very reverant atmosphere. The first act was a dude I'd played with years before, I won't name him but I felt it was was pretty much style over substance. All stock DADGAD widdley tricks and absurdly acted over-emoting to the extent that I found it very hard not to cringe myself inside-out. I was literally squirming on my chair, rubbing my hands on my face, desperate to escape the awful over-sincerity of it all. Everyone else in there seemed to be lapping it up though. Even the extended interludes of tuning-up which everyone seemed to think were a part of the charm. Genre pastiche songs and weak vocals (disguised by shouting off mic) all eagerly devoured by a room full of people in awe of some hammy acting, decent finger-picking and a 6'2" dude with Noel Fielding's hair and very tight trousers. It did pick up a bit later but yeah, really not for me.
Then we all got drunk.
The second dude, who's name I have no idea about was god-fucking-awful knuckle-chewingly embarassingly shit. Looked like he'd just popped out of the office with his M&S jumper of over his least favourite work shirt , tentatively strumming open chords. But oh my gentle jesus the lyrics. Me and my bandmates standing at the back started drunkenly hysterically texting highlights to each other. My phone tells me some of these were: "You're my deadly muse". "You're the harbour of my soul". "I'm a farmer with no land". "I have an empire of love". It was the worst kind of miserablist bedroom misogynous nonsense imaginable and it went on and on and on. Dire. I imagine we weren't being very subtle. I left and got more drunk.
The headline act, I will refarin from naming also because it's occured to that google may find this rant/review. But they and they were haaa-MAYZING. I was now very pissed but, beautiful beautiful vocals and delicate fingerpicking, complex gentle songs with - oddly sympathetic - electric bass and BV backing. Was properly blown away. Sat in silence, totally smit and loved every second of it. Wowee.
Unfortunately our childish snickering, texting and general arsehole-ish behaviour the rest of the evening precluded being me able to approach the promoter to discuss gigs. I did send something on twitter which was of course ignored. Not sure if it's because he just doesn't bother replying, doesn't like us, or thinks we're a bunch of snidey cunts. Which we are.
And I guess I'll never know.
Fun night!

ever listened to Creep Folk? It's the new big thing on the folk scene. Beach Violence invented it.
Not terrible. Not really my thing tho. I'm more of a Tom Waits and Richard Thompson kinda guy.
Was supposed to be at the Windmill playing with Fat White Family's creepy Manson Family Covers bad. Now THAT'S creepy.

Got pulled over by a police for an illegal right off Camberwell Rd towards Kennington at Oval Triangle (omg mindfuck etc) this morning.
Been doing it for years and although I'm aware it should be ahead only at those lights, they're configured so that traffic coming in the opposite direction is held back for a good 20 seconds as if there was a filter right light. That makes peeling off right totally traffic free and quite safe. Even if you miss that window of opportunity by arriving after the ahead traffic has been released, there's an island to pull over shelter behind, safely out of traffic from both directions.
Played dumb and was let off this morning. It's annoying though because without that perfectly safe maneuver, to stay legal I'll be forced to stay in traffic go straight on, all the way round the Oval before waiting in the middle of the road on a really busy congested corner with crap visibility to turn off and double-back round the Oval. The only other alternative is to continue on to Vauxhall away from my intended destination and negotiate that whole mess before doubling back again. Or I could get off and walk*.
Hurry up TfL

Ok, going to to bring crank puller & spanners in with me tomorrow. Might also cable-tie note to frame with my number on to ask about paying the release fee. Don't ask, don't get right?
Dunnit. Liberated a sweet set of 165mm Chrome Sugino Messengers with 44t black chainring, (and shitty plastic BLB BMX pedals w/BLB straps).
Well chuffed with my freebies!

You pay extra for good frequencies. Anything over 1khz is going to cost moar. I used to get NOS frequencies from a mail order place but these days the Chinese (who bought all the obsolete US frequency machinery in the late 70s) are turning out decent quality frequencies down as far as 100hz for decent money.
