Went out today for the first time with my local cycling club. Hmmm... got there and asked what the pace would be like, at which point got looked at and comment muttered "not very fast, have you seen what he's riding" (the shame of the Langster). Then got told off about my slack chain from some old boy! Later into the ride the group split as a couple of blokes speeded up to 23-25mph. F*cking hurt but managed to stay on the back for the whole 60 miles, despite dropping others. Made me think if it was worth the bother, and why cycling fails to attract newbies....

lpg, the law relating to negligence is based on precedent and on the principle of what a 'reasonable man' might do in that situation. For example, if someone drives into the back of you, then the general principle is that they should be leave sufficient distance between you and themselves and be aware of the road conditions. The situation you describe is slightly different. If you decide to undertake cars then you are doing something inherently dangerous. However, the car drivers should be aware that in heavy traffic then cyclists might undertake and that they should exercis caution when turning. In this case it would be dealt with on a split liability basis... god I'm boring!

Arrghhh.... Cleaned bike today, went down local bike shop to get wheels trued and came home. Basically, I live in a flat and the bike sleeps downstairs in the hall. As I wheeled bike into the hall, the front door swung shut (it usually stays put) and hit the top tube of my frame (Alu not steel). Has left a dent which you wouldn't really notice unless you ran your finger along the top tube or it catches the light. Now panicking (through annoyance as much as anything). Been told that dents in alu frames will lead to catastrophic failure akin to sitting astride a ticking time bomb or that I shouldn't worry about it. Any comment please.

WTF is it with all this got bad service so go on to a forum and bitch about it! Deal with it... tell the store that you're unhappy and ask that they sort it out. If they don't want to know speak to trading standards. My guess is that speaking politely to someone senior will usually get the problem resolved. Had a problem last week at one of those stand alone Bike Hut shops, the bloke I spoke with was reluctant to refund my money but it all got sorted in the end and the guy then sold me a pair of Gator Skins for £30.

Fair play to you! You helped out without thinking in two really nasty situations when others might have thought about looking the other way. I think most people are willing to help out if they think they can. Having said that, some people are seriously fucked up - was living in Brighton when I saw a couple get knocked down by a complete c*nt in a body kitted Astra. My mate attended to them and I had to hold off the driver who was shouting "you've fucked my car up" while trying to get at one of the people he'd knocked over. Thank god the police arrived quickly and arrested him.

Got to say - you can't complain. Kid at my school had his tyre cut. Happily repaired the puncture but in the meantime he'd phoned his dad who had to drive 10 miles to pick him up. If he doesn't know how to repair a puncture then that's his problem. It's a good job I was prepared (like most of us on here) to help out. I think that for too long cyclists have relied on friendly shops to help them out, but with expensive rents and business tax it's little wonder they now have to charge a realistic sum for what seem to us minor repairs. But... it also shows that if you support your local shops against the major players, then they in turn will usually help you out. Must say I'd rather buy an inner tube for £4.99 in a local shop than pay £4.50 in Evans.

BringMeMyFix - that sounds like a surgical procedure!
