hassanr also be careful of relacing a hub with a new cross pattern. once a hub has been laced a certain way you should always have it laced that way (both pattern and spoke directions), since the tensioning/retensioning/general riding stresses cause the spoke holes to deform a bit, and putting tension on them from a different angle can cause hub failure. just keep it in mind :)

Yeah - Arup has been a mine and I think dogsballs is over this way - Twickenham - so there does seem to be a lot of help around, yourself included. Its the old front wheel I'm rebuilding that was on the bike when I found it. Seems a shame to throw it. Mavic rim and Ofmega 36 hole hub. Think it'll look ok when done - might not be round but...

I think I'll stick with the 3 cross for now as that is what it is at present. It is a 36 hole hub so the 4 cross is a potential for the future - it'll need a new rim at some point anyway. Cheers for the advice. Now to get me some spokes and some time oh and some cash!

It is good to know they'd all be the same length. Someone else told me they would be different lengths. Is the spoke length different if you do a cross 4 rather than a cross 3?

Also - cause I is a complete doofus - when checking to see if a wheel is a cross four or cross 3, do you just count the spokes that are crossed on one side of the hub?

Can anyone tell me whether it is easier to work out the spoke sizes for a re-build before starting the disassembly process - basically swapping spoke for spoke - or is it better to strip the wheel and start from scratch - measuring each spoke as they come out?

Took a while - my boss kept coming in. Was a surprisingly funny read. It read in parts like a comedy - especially the one person who cycled there alone thinking you were ahead of them and they'd just gone the wrong route. Did that bloke's face recover?

To find out what size chain or chain wheel/ sprocket you have is it just a simple matter of measuring between the pins (on the chain) or tooth apex (on the sprocket/ chain wheel)?

If you ain't after looks - or compliments! - then go for the Bontrager cork bar tape. Its not the shitzle, or the pizzle, but they will survive the drizzle! Holds up well to daily abuse. Obviously not for the fashionistas!

Bought myself a chain whip today and went from 42:13 to 42:15. Slightly less godly me thinks. Changing the ring off the cassette hub with the whip is so much easier!
