Can I ask what sort of issues you had that you needed to call them?
TBH, I am a bit anxious to switch now as I WFH for the foreseeable and my job is digital learning so... but if I don’t do it now, I’d be stuck with Sky until next summer with another ridiculous piece increase this time next year... so will have to...

Thanks I did consider them before but SSE also have been pretty good customer service wise. The only possible issue is that their CS isn’t 7 days a week... they shut shop at 2pm on Sat...
Guess the true test is when you need them to send someone out, but then don’t they all use Openreach engineers? Maybe some companies have priority bookings?

I have an idea, maybe a crazy and (for some) unnecessary one, but here it is -
I think we are all in the King’s college hospital catchment area, and we might all end up being there due to the current shit storm, so I am thinking of approaching a fruit and vegs wholesaler to see if they’d deliver some essential supplies to the front line staff.
As luck would have it or not, I expressed some concerns about my upcoming appointment at King’s so I now have the direct number of the service manager that I could get in touch to see if she could be the named contact for receiving deliveries.
I am going to do it myself anyway, but it would be good if others could share the bills so we could get more delivered to them.
It is truly a time of every little help...
Thoughts?

I really need to switch from Sky now as I have had enough of their piss taking we will charge you like a mug business model.
In my area, most ISPs use BT cables, does it mean I’d get more of less the same sort of stability I switch to a different ISP that uses BT cables?
I know speed and how they manage their bandwidth etc etc is different from ISP to ISP but how about stability?

Are you quite strict about not using your home machine for work? I was like this for years but since the WFH start this week and since we don't know how long this is going to last... I have given up... So Teams chat and cheating (quick google on stuff when doing screenshare training) on work laptop. Everything else on home machine...

Word of warning - if you are not a gamer or usually work from home type, don’t get a monitor that is bigger than what you have in the office.
I got a 4K 27inch monitor on loan to me since Oct last year and I was really happy with it. Then in Dec I decided I want 1 at home too, only I went for a 4K 32inch... now whenever I am at work, I think the 27inch monitor is shit. 🤣🤣🤣

The XPS still won't make it to the list, I have never seen one of them here, I see a lot Inspiron though, as they are basically the same from a business point of view?
I am going to hold off with starting the coversation until at least next week... everyone is either confused and / or stressed, so probably not a good time to ask for something that isn't that important especially my Mac laptop is working perfectly fine...

No.... I am afraid... when was the Surface Laptop 3 released? Our PC list was updated in Dec 2019 and if these was released at least a good couple of months before that, then absolutely definitely no chance.
I could always ask but since I am not a senior staff in their eye, they won’t. It’s hard enough to get them get my current laptop fixed because the issues I had didn’t significantly affect my work... erm... only a couple of keys on the keyboard broken... sorry not trying to rant... 😬
Alternatively, since I am in no rush to get it, I could wait till June to see if they’d update the list as they seem to do it twice a year... with us getting ready to shut down, it’d probably have to be in June anyway....

I just looked and be reminded the Surface Book 2 is a 2017 model with no news that a 3 is on the way, if I asked for a new machine now, it’d have to last me 5 years and I am not sure if the Surface is a good idea anymore. Even the Toshiba doesn’t come with the latest parts but at least it’s i7 with 16GB so a bit more future proof...
Guess I have just answered my own question, haven’t I?
It’s a real shame they won’t get Dell anymore, it’s nothing to do with cost, it’s to do with contracts as I am sure it’s the case with most big organisations.

If I were on the market for a laptop for myself, I'd go for a XPS, no question about it. Might still, currently deciding if I should switch to PC completely, still have a 15" MBP, but I don't really use it much anymore... hummm...
I like the Surface because of the tablet, but then like something and need something are very different. I am not sure... I guess I will just ask if I could swap to a PC first, our dickhead IT buyer might say no, althogh he is the same grade as me, he seems to always only buy fancy stuff senior staff... I wonder why!
Really is no chance for anything else other than the 3 choices - he might not even let me swap.
Thanks! I think deliveries would be taken care of by the wholesaler. It looks like some of them are doing fruit and vegs parcels delivered to your door now, so that might be the easier; each staff could just grab a box and go. I will have to do more research tonight to find the best price / quality combo. Can’t have the NHS staff eating shit quality food either!
I have teamed up with a South London based social media mini star (he’s got over 30k followers), a lot of his followers are also South London based. He is gonna help ask his followers for money!
I will make the necessary calls tomorrow to see if King’s allows these sort of things first and then I think I’ll set up a fundraising page, are you happy to give The fundraising a push if the mission is a go?
I am thinking, if we could get the word out far and wide and aim for £1500, that should be enough to feed some of the most affected front line staff...
