Bad Science
It does sound like a failing hard drive.
Fit another drive; there is a spare bay, underneath the existing drive. I think you need the old style IDE drive, not SATA. Use Carbon Copy Cloner (free download) to clone your old drive to the new one. Set the new drive as your start-up disk in preferences.
Reboot; be lucky. -

I can only offer anecdotal evidence:
in 2006/early 2007 we bought seven MacPros for video editing. They pretty much ran 24hrs a day, either editing or compressing video, for three years with nary a problem.
These were the 2x 2.66 GHz (5150) Dual-core Intel Xeon MacPros.
I'd avoid second hand iMacs - they have a shorter working life and are much harder to repair if they develop a problem -

Matt - yeah, sorry. Just seemed strange that so many people had problems on the same day.
If you can't boot up your old machine from the disks, you could try booting it from your new machine.
Connect the two with a firewire cable
Boot the new machine normally
Boot the old machine while holding down the TIf you're not even getting to the boot screen, it's probably fubar.
Good luck -

Just spotted a guy on rosebury avenue wearing a BDW Penguin Tshirt. I pointed at him with glee as I have the same shirt, he looked back at me perplexed so I said DAS with a grin. A stoney face looked back at me. I wondered if this is what he gets all the time when he borrows his housemates shirt or whether he thought I was mad as he was stood sans bike at the bus stop. I was bombing it home man I understand It was daft but nothing else could express what I meant so quickly - and next time give us a smile :)
Sorry Clara! It was only me - a not very important nor active forumenger.
Didn't mean to diss you - you'd long sped on by by the time I realised what you'd said and broke into a smile.
Roll easy! -
great arguement, ignoring you complete lack of understanding, of how lightsabres work, it would work as an arguement to wear a paper bag on your head... I have no doubt the paper bag would rip in an accident, and that it would have absorbed some energy to have broken...
Anecdotally within polo there are a couple of players I notice who take much bigger risks when they play in helmets compared to when they don't...
Great argument ignoring your complete lack of understanding of how commas work.

As with good parenting or man-management, wielding authority while maintaining trust and respect requires impartiality and consistency. For all the good work they do, the police score a massive fail for consistency, particularly regarding traffic offences.
I understand why people have a lack of respect, but I get really pissed off with the childish antagonism that is sometimes displayed here. Yes, criticise the police for their failings, but don't go out of your way to make their jobs harder than they already are. -

How did you get into this situation? And more importantly how can I avoid it?
I've just bought three new Macs with SL - haven't transferred any fonts from my Leopard machines, but I'll have to eventually.
Any tips?
TaOh, and I meant to say -
have you tried checking the files in terminal?
(Open terminal, type "file" and a space, and drag one of your Unix Executable file into the window. Hit return. You should see info poss including the original extension) -

@Kornblume
Where abouts on St John's Square? We have CCTV footage in my building, above The Priory , which covers the North West corner -

"annual tests between 50mg (proposed new level) and 80mg (current level) were about 48000 per year. If you take all the police time that charging those people would consume, it might well be true that deploying them elsewhere would save more lives than the number advanced by proponents of a cut"
Well yes - but you'd hope that the number of drivers caught with levels in this range would drop very swiftly if this legislation was introduced and enforced.
In reality, it seems to me that drivers routinely push at the limits imposed by legislation; not just drinking but parking, speed limits, phone use etc.
Drink driving at any level is inexcusable - I'd go for a zero limit tomorrow if it was up to me. -

Hey petesgaff
I've read your blog and I'll keep reading it. I'll also pass it on to everyone I can think of - it's cracking stuff. To fight so hard, and with such humour, wit and honesty, against something that fucking scary is an inspiration. If I can face life's challenges with one tenth of your courage I'll be proud of myself.
Thanks for posting, and roll easy tough guy! -
Great - now we've got this evil cunt running the country's transport policy.
We're all doomed I tell ye!New transport secretary yearns for the golden era before the 'war on motorists'
Not slang - I'm sure you are right about the specs, but they look sharper than other screens we have around the office.
Just my opinion.
