No, what you need is short high intensity intervals. Much more effective per unit time if losing weight is the objective. Lots of anecdote and even some evidence points to this http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=HIIT+weight+loss
Long steady rides are nice for enjoying cycling and the countryside, but for getting fit and losing lard HIIT is the way to go.
mdcc, got any good links to sessions that you like / recommend? I quite like a bit of interval training, but there are plenty of differing opinions about interval and rest leength and length of session etc. For example, unless on a turbo or exercise bike, tabata intervals of 20 sec isn't that managable. However, rowing ergs, elipticals, lend themselves to controlled interval training really well.

Thanks, that's very useful. I'm still not sure a 750 mile tour in October is feasible with just a saddlebag, hip pouch and top tube bag but I like a challenge.
Hi Tricity,
I lejoged in 11 days this sumer with a carradice saddle bag and topeak tri bag and bar bag and was fine. By the end, the bar bag was little more than a glorified map holder, and its carrying capacity was surplus to requirements. Next time I do any real distance, it'll be saddle bag and tri bag only. A bit of brutal / honest packing means you really don't need that much stuff at all.
With saddle bag, tri bag and hip pouch i'm sure you'll be fine. Actually, are you planning to camp or B&B? We stayed in B&Bs / YHAs and this made things much easier.

Scoot, If you want a top to ride in with some functionality, why not consider either one of the Surface hoodies - casual, windproof, some waterproofing. Or for classic cycling chic, a Tudor Sports top? I am rather fond of mine, it is fine for general usage, and at £40 direct from them a snip whilst supporting a small UK company.
Neither are exactly unltimate riding jackets though.

Has anyone had any experience of Verenti bikes? I have been asked by a friend about them. He is engaged in the usual C2W bike buying.
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/verenti-rhigos04/
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/verenti-millook/
Of the two, the Millook seems to be a fair buy at £900. Decent enough gruppo and wheels for a starter with an ever reliable mix of alu / carbon. However, I'm not that au fait with the brand.
Anyone have good or bad things to say about them?

Branwen, do you have a link to the watch that marky ^^ has quoted?
I've found this:

They have removed New Cross gate......
Which bit / where was changed Mr Skulls? Do you mean the besson st / bit round by the montague etc? I loathe the loop of Amerham Rd / Lewisham way / New Cross Rd, esp if you are riding West. The obvious place to be is in the left lane after the Amersham so as to head for the buslane, but then fast moving left turning cars heading for Lewisham way tend to cut across agressively as you begin to flow round to the right. If you position yourself on the right at the lights, then the traffic often flows either side of you which tends to be fairly unpleasant as well.
On an unrealted note, as an SE cyclist, do you agree that the new bikelanes on Southwark Park Rd / Grange Rd will be fucking awful once installed?

I'm undecided as to whether this is something I would use, or gimicky and foul:
