Bare minimum (ie things you'll use most regularly):
Puncture repair kit
Pump
15mm spanner
Alan keys
Chain lubeI wouldn't bother with anything else at the moment. Agree with winter re buying decent tools though. Shit tools are a false economy (and generally unsatisfactory to use)
Beyond the basics:
After the basics I'd get a track pump - you'll use it weekly so worth getting if there's any extra ££, rather than any other tools which are nice to have but infrequently used.
A chain splitter is good to have but not really used very often. You could get a multitool with one on (although separate ones are generally nicer to use).
You'll only need a chain whip it you're changing sprockets. Doubt you'll do this often. So leave it and borrow one if you need.

Typically shambolic but entertaining opener to the TNRC season. With Dave and I contriving to miss the train we decided to short circuit the route, we ended up chopping quite a bit off, putting us way ahead of the group, which did give us time for a pint in Coldharbour.
We also had a bit of a close encounter with the wildlife. Somewhere near Holmsbury a deer burst out the bushes at the roadside and, scrabbling for grip on the tarmac, crossed right in front of us. Luckily it was on a slight uphill so we weren't travelling very fast, wouldn't have been pleasant colliding with 10 stone of very fresh venison.
Some impressive alt' route devining by MoNw led us nicely to intercept the 5hills route about a third of the way round. Some impressive spinning I noticed too Matt. That deer scared the shit out of me (the very thought of it on one of those descents), so the midride ale was most welcome!

Laws forbidding the harassment of cyclists
In the US rather than here, but sounds like a great idea on the face of it. Anyone know if there have been successful cases over there, or thoughts on whether it'd be better than making reports to 'roadsafe' over here?
