ps - i'm not trying to make any suggestions about this particular incident: of course it is a tragedy and my condolences go to the victim's relatives. i will keep on campaigning for improvements in the transport infrastructure of london that may help prevent such incidents in the future; however, i remain constantly disappointed when comparing the number of people who comment on these sorts of threads with the numbers who actually seem to make any effort to stop the threads in the first place.
-
that is a shocking/terrible stat.
no, that is actually about average, possibly even a "good" number. i note that olaf says there have actually been 12 fatal (to cyclist) crashes this year. i have previously discussed cycling fatalities with him, and at that time, i wrote:
"...statistically speaking, if annual deaths are modelled using a poisson distribution, as we did, one would expect between 8 deaths and 25 deaths given that the average underlying rate was 15 deaths per year."
(actually, i think the rate was 16.7 deaths per year).

best to read through here: http://www.lfgss.com/thread4213.html
if you're a member of the LCC, they have some solicitors, but there are a number around who are cycle friendly.
good luck.

i received an email this morning:
We've had some shocking news. XX died on Sunday, as the result of a fatal accident. He was bike riding in the country with a friend and turned a corner on a small country road where he collided with an uncoming car. His friend, who was behind him, saw the whole thing. [He] died instantly.
i don't know any more than that. he was an old family friend that i've known all my life, lived and worked in london, and had just celebrated his birthday the day before. he was in his early 60s.

RIP
On a separate note, how insensitive is the guy interviewed who's organising the street party; "..we won’t let it affect us or ruin the day." Basically, saying "I didn't know him so I don't care". What a complete arse. If this wasn't on a respectable news site, I'd have thought it was a wind-up.
i totally agree. absolutely disgusting.

hello mkropitz,
did you fill in an email address when you registered, or make some selection? i can only see posting a visitors message to your wall as a way of contacting you, not pm, so guess it's something to do with your account.
anyway, i wondered what was the best you could do on the fisheye lens (including postage, i guess). and also, if there was a "quick" option (there's something next saturday that it would be quite fun to have it for, although i suspect that will be a little too soon, given that friday is a holiday here).
cheers,

Thanks for the support, people :) I'm a little bit gutted I didn't get any longer (I think the previous person went on way over his time) as lynx is right, I was just getting into my stride and then JV kept on cutting me off. I think I did make one mistake when I said that some people are not too bright when riding down the side of lorries, so sorry if I offended anyone with that. However, I think the example about Dublin was good.
For those who missed it, it's on the BBC iPlayer at http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b00w04sw/Jeremy_Vine_26_11_2010 (linked from the JV home page) for the next week. It starts about 1.49 into the show - i.e. right before the end.
Cheers!

To answer my own question, I've just found some details of a ban in Dublin: http://www.dublincity.ie/ROADSANDTRAFFIC/HGV/Pages/HGV%20Management%20Strategy.aspx
It would still be great to hear if anyone knows of any others.

A number of people will have already seen the paper that I recently co-authored:
I've been invited on the Jeremy Vine show today (radio 2) at about 1.30pm to discuss this further. As I'm preparing, I wondered if anyone knows of any existing lorry bans in other cities - for example, I've heard it rumoured that there is a ban in Geneva, or possibly some German cities. There may be others (too or instead) - e.g. Copenhagan, or somewhere in France.
Can anybody help? Thanks.

actually, i think this is really a lesson to cyclists: ride in the middle of the lane, and give yourself ample space for unexpected things to happen.
note: i am not trying to blame the cyclist here, but i think there is also a bit of a culture amongst cyclists of blaming "someone else". i think the cycle instructors on this forum will agree that teaching is to ride a good meter or so away from the edge of the road, just in case this sort of thing happens. and, unfortunately, it does happen - when i was researching cycle deaths recently, i remember noticing that one of the worst crashes involved 4 different vehicles, and apparently was caused by someone in a parked car opening a car door onto a cyclist.... fortunately, i am happy to say that cyclist deaths caused in this manner are extremely few.
note: i am sure that both whoever it was that opened the car door, as well as the bus driver, feel absolutely terrible this evening, and my thoughts are with them, as well as the family and friends of the deceased.
