Was more concerned about getting myself out of the path of oncoming traffic. Lucky nothing was behind me - that's a busy junction and not often the case. Quite scary if I think about it, so I won't think about it.similar thing a coupl'a weeks back, bombing down caledonian road near kings X checking out which bit of traffic to go through and i hit a massive pothole, flying head over handlebars. amazingly lucky there was nothing behind, really, and escaped with a couple of grazes

hippy I'm sure I was dropped by the doctor when I was born..
i did that once - a real slippery baby born by caesarean section that the obstetrician handed to me. luckily i caught it before it hit the floor (and the father was talking to the mother behind the anaesthetic screen so didn't see me).
oops!

lol@hippy! i'm actually feeling kinda dead today!
i actually just picked up some bike maps today so route is highly likely to change - but this above does give good idea. i think it's mostly the same as hippy's map anyway, although tried to stick to smaller streets a bit more. anyway, hope it will be a flexible and fun ride. -
hippy Someone with a clue wanna check this and see if it's anywhere near correct? I just whacked the cemeteries into g maps and this is what it spat out..
ok, i've now adapted this a bit further... have started from brompton ==> kensal rise ==> highgate ==> abney park (stoke newington) ==> tower hamlets ==> STOPPED as i want to go to bed! the map is one of the ones that does mileage - as you can see, not a short distance already, plus people wanna go on...
[ulist][li]the route[/li][/ulist] please feel free to edit and add more :)
nb, i should point out that htere are bits alongside canals, which we can avoid if need be. i also don't know what the hills are like (are there any?!) on route, which way we'll be approaching them, etc, so ideas welcomed. -
wayne_f14 for you east end boys - send me your colour requests and I'll send a pack to aidan for Sunday [if that's ok with you aidan]
add your name and colour choice to list - smeeearrrrrr, where are yew
Kilgore - 1 pink, 1 green
Rakan - turquoise [deep cyan is nearest]
Aidan - yellerd0cA - anything bright and colourful, and a handful of the 'give away' ones. thanks, they're amazing (and you too)!

TheDude Its my birthday on Halloween so my ladyfriend is taking me to Paris I where we are going on a midnight exploration of the catacombs. Freekin awesome!
you need to read up on the cave clan then, as mentioned on the other thread. that will certainly be superb!!
-
yeah, i heard of some guys in paris, but they's at least got catacombs (and i think the guys were old ozzie CC dudes).. hippy, you're from melbs, right? they've got a whole gang down there. i can't imagine anyone really wanting to go down in the waste in london, tho, apart from mebbe some thames water dudes.... which brings us right back round to sewers and cholera and SHIT - another thing i heard a good hours lecture on today (and quite interesting, even if i did disagree with some of the political statements behind the lecturers viewpoint). the thing about oz is, they're predominantly storm drains, for flash flooding (etc) clearance, instead of the drizzly moisture and worst we are forecast for tomorrow.
keep dry kids! -

stompy, you're so right! and the pump is right outside the pub - i'll show you the whole thing: we learnt about it in "school" the other day - i'm studying epidemiology - and we had a guided tour to the pub and everything. it's really quite fascinating....
dunno much about the sewers tho - closest i got was draining in sydney on an occasion with the cave clan, but i don't think there's too much of that over here... love to be proved wrong (and do it!) -
stompy Anyone up for this again? October 18th?
yeah, i would be... and, as i'm now a fully fledged member of the John Snow Society, I can even indoctrinate you all and teach the real reasons behind the history of the pub and it's significance (well, John Snow's, actually) in the history of modern Hi Jean and why you don't have cholera. Anyone interested?

@hippy: it's the one in the pic earlier this thread -

@asm: i'm learning, i'm learning! i don't know shit about bike parts (yet). and i look forward to the bagel - it was great to meet the person who stole my name! -
skydancer Thanks d0cA... i've been riding about 8 months and generally feel confident, but have never been able to stop as quickly as on my hybrid. I wonder if i am either not strong enough or just havn't twigged how to do it properly. I don't really want to add a back brake.
sorry, didn't mean to be patronising. but as far as i'm concerned, safety comes before being cool - and yes, i am a doctor, so i've seen some of the results of stupidity/over-confidence.

Possible Map???hey, thanks: that's roughly what i was thinking, although it seems very much like a car route and could no doubt be much refined for cycling... a bit more direct ;-)
as to whoever: i'm sure that the graveyards are probably locked down at night, but that's no reason why not to visit them, i'm sure we'll be able to figure out something fun (trick or treating? apple-bobbing? or just plain grave-robbing??!). i think it's tommy(thebrick) who always comes up with the gmap-pedometer stuff so i shall do a "proper" map tomorrow, at least of the north london bits (as i don't know/go south that much). as for the alleycat: yeah, i'm a total beginner, what is it? racing down alleyways?? it would be great to fit that in, too. -
-
ok, i'm heading out in a few minutes and got stuff to do this evening, so i'll either work on the route later on tonight or tomorrow evening and then we can bicker over the details after that. HOWEVER, the current plan is this order: brompton, kensal rise, highgate (east and west), abney park (stoke newington), tower hamlets, nunhead, norwood. if anyone knows any additional stops we should make in between or any specifics about any of those places (e.g. easiest walls to scale with a bike, best place for a TT, must visit pubs, or whatever...), please let me know.
oh, and i repeat, this will be a beginner/n00b friendly ride. lookin' forward to it! -
i think the hospital was there before the bike route.
