Gabes...Did you use a Six Moon Lunar on the divide?
Indeed I did. I only pitched it a few times, as I had a bivvy with me too, and the weather was amazing. I only pitched when there was a mosquito issue really, or a risk of rain. Got rained on one night I think. It kept the nasty nasty Montanan mozzies out perfectly.
I've used it loads here too, and it's served me very well. The floor is very thin, I pitched in accidentally on a baby gorse bush in Wales earlier in the year, now it has a few small holes in the floor. Not a problem though.

Okay, so tubeless will be about £180 before tyres (how much are tubeless tyres? What else would I need)? I could do MT35s with Continental X-King 29 x 2.2 for £130 (merlincycles.com/shimano-29er-mtb-wheel-sale-tyres-tubes-76373.html). I think I'll just do that, unless anyone thinks that's dumb.
Continental X-Kings are great, but spend the money on the ProTection model, about £45 per tyre, but they'll last. I have a pair that have done over 4000 miles around the UK without a single puncture and still have plenty of tread on, and another pair that did Tour Divide that again had no punctures and have tread to spare. Superb tyres, fast rolling on road, grippy enough in mud.

I met a few bears.
One Grizzly by a road, 2 black bears on trails. None too close thankfully.
I also encountered a Mountain Lion at night, that thing was huge, and fortunately, wasn't interested in me. I pedalled hard to get away from that one.
I also saw millions of chipmunks, gophers, ground squirrels. And with 5 miles to go, I had a buffalo running alongside me. Scary in dark!

They only differ in that they didn't leave with the 'Grand Depart' We all have to follow the same rules, like no drafting, no kit sharing, no food sharing, etc. But, there is the natural (small) advantage for GD racers that there are lots of tyres tracks to follow in some place. And I think the knowledge other people are on route with you probably give a small sense of security.
