Just back from trip to Paris...presume I'm preaching to the converted, but it's well worth taking your bike as the city is great for getting around in with its mixture of cycle paths and roads. Some of the squares can be a little interesting (Arc de Triomphe in particular) and the pave is hard going at times but you can see so much more when you stay above ground.
Look out for the cops though, they're seemingly everywhere and look a lot more scarey than the British police. The Parisians definitely seem to be a lot more law abiding as far as stopping at red lights than Londoners. Fixed and SSers are beginning to pop up all over the place. Checked out Cyclope and l'Atelier de Velos but it was the latter that tickled my fancy - really friendly staff.
Food is great and doesn't need to cost the earth if you do the baguette et fromage routine and there's an endless list of things to check out.

Definitely suggest a folding bag rather than a hard case...was in Paris last w/end and managed to ride to and from station. Large case like the above pictured would have problems fitting in the luggage area. Unfortunately the bag I used was not mine so can't really offer at this stage.
Paris was lovely - you'll have a treat...

2010-18-04 Surrey Hills (redux)
9.30 am Waterloo Station

Following on from the continued success of our borrowing this route and my continued inability to climb 2 of the hills on the route without pussing out, the decision to repeat on 65" was made on the train back from Effingham yesterday.
As always this is about 30 miles of hilly riding with several fast descents, we're looking at 4 or 5 climbs. By my non expert standards they're all judged at above "ouchy". One is judged as "fucking hurty". It's a maximum of 3 hours riding. The first ride was 6 climbs and took about 3 hours. Yesterday's ride was 4 climbs and 2 and a bit hours. So somewhere between 2 and 3 hours of decent paced riding.
Things to know:
It takes about an hour to get there on the train from Waterloo.
We will regroup at junctions and no one will be abandoned.
It's a nice paced, sociable ride in the countryside on some hills, with a stop at the end before we get the train home for a pint / cup of tea.weather check the night before.
NOTE: EARLIER START SO WE CAN CATCH THE 10am TRAIN.so then, who's in?

Climbing is the main goal of this ride... but don't forget that this beautiful route has also flat, rolling and downhill..which deserves same effort as well as the climbing.
The training will finish at the pub!

I am travelling by Eurostar on Thursday next week and I'm keen to borrow a bike bag that can fold up and be carried somehow in my oversized courier bag (cycle to and from the station at either end). I've actually got a proper bike bag but it's too large, certainly not foldable and is being borrowed by a friend for a few weeks whilst she goes back to Oz. Any help more than gratefully received

Need someone with design skills - would be good to get some posters, spoke cards and t-shirts (different colours for different teams)
Need also to find out what key dates there are in the calendar to avoid double booking - particularly interested in input from polo, track and messenger crews for this.

Am figuring on doing it in a weekend and if we run a tight ship, we shouldn't need a bank holiday. Something like this:
Friday night: Alley Cat
Saturday midday: Laps Richmond Park
Saturday night: Track Stand Competition, Drag Sprints then Booze and Ride Event
Sunday afternoon: Polo Tournament
Sunday evening: Roller RacingEqual scoring for each discipline. Figure you might need to do some polo inductions to make sure everyone could at least hold a mallet, if not get it through the goal

It's been interesting seeing the fixed gear scene developing over the last few years. It's obviously got a whole lot bigger but also slightly more fragmented as people follow their chosen passions, be it time on the track, pulling tricks, polo, alley cats or simply time at the pub. Obviously you see a few faces at more than one but you also get a lot of people sticking to their chosen tribe.
I've seen these tribes develop and I figured it might fun plan to get these different tribes competing with each other over various disciplines in a 'clash of the codes' with representatives from each of the relevant tribes. Tribes would be represented by three riders who would then have to compete across all events which would hopefully make for some comic performances. Hopefully you'd see a bit of friendly rivalry but also bring people together that might not have seen each other in a while
