i'm not sure the type of water makes all that much difference, unless you are going to use fresh water for each one. even then there will be some residue in the tank

I read few articles (mainly to justify using deionised water, as it's all i had!). most of them don't recommend a detergent for US cleaning.

i have seen a few people suggest that both a wet vac type cleaner and an US gets the best, as the soap gets the greasy prints and the US gets the dirt, but i'll be fucked if i ever use a wet vac one again. I certainly won't be cleaning them twice!

I have cleaned about 30 or so records with mine. it seems to do a pretty good job.

1. you need to wipe the record first with a cloth - the fingerprints do not come off in the machine.
   
2. i reckon somewhere between 5-10 is the right spot to change the water. i did 5, then 10, then 15 and after 15, the water was dirty and the filter was showing the muck.
   
3. there is dirt in the bottom of the tank - it is black! i hope it isn't vinyl.
   4 tipping the water back in each time is the hassle, although minor.

Mine has been a bit poo. I've had the battery module in the boot go (tow truck job). The water pump went (£1000 and a tow truck job) it also had the central locking module go. Also had consumables (incl a wheel bearing and brakes, but that's normal)

That's in a year that I've done 20k+ miles.

Seems that electrical issues are the main probl em with mine.
