So should we considered in the same vain as Peds?
Not wanting to sound harsh but Stylist just caused an accident which not only damaged someones car but may have also scared the shit out of an innocent driver. I know if I hit someone regardless of the circumstances I would be pretty shook up.
If you are going to ride on the road you need to accept some level of responsibility. For the majority of cyclists RLJ is pointless and dangerous. Couriers are in a rush, they need to save time cause it costs them money but doing it on your 5 mile commute is mostly not needed.
Yeah but no but yeah but no but ....
Roads aren't some holy lands that only the deserving get to use. Roads are for everybody in this country to get about on.
Cars and lorries need tax and insurance cos they fuck the roads up very badly, cause loads of pollution, and kill and maim tens of thousands each year.
An insurance-for-all policy would be like a runaway train, soon resulting in pedestrians needing 3rd party.
And then how many over-protective parents are going to let their kids out uninsured? All over the country people cycle just to get to the corner shop or to the films etc. including kids and teenagers - an insurance system (like a compulsory h****t law), could arguably put an end to a past-time which, although it doesn't seem like it, is fairly fundamental to growing up in this country. -

Well I spose with the recession and all people feel like they can do something e.g. reigning in the greed and consumption for a few months.
Imminent population and habitat destruction through severe climatic changes is something that arguably, even the most well intentioned person is now fairly powerless to prevent, and therefore contemplating it can be rather a daunting and depressing affair. And it all seems rather abstract and difficult to visualise, another thing that might dissuade people from thinking too much about it.
Possibly. -

What about the majority of the Arctic?
What about all the floating ice?
What about the fact that the earth isn't getting warmer anyway?
What about the fact that humans are responsible for a tiny proportion of CO2 output?
What about the fact that CO2 barely registers on the scale of greehouse gases.
What about the fact that the "greenhouse effect" is a fantasy that has never been proved?Floating ice - what about it? is a potential sea-level rise of 10m from less than half of antarctica's ice sheets not enough for you? Arctic ice melting will effect the thermohaline circulation. The ice sheet on Greenland melting (note the 'land' bit) would cause a sea-level rise. Greenland is very very big.
Warming - The earth is getting warmer at the moment (i.e. it is going through a warming phase - read the IPCC report)
CO2 output by humans - well it may be a tiny proportion but it's the most important one
CO2 as a GHG - it is not the most powerful GHG, but it is by far and away the predominant one - methane is more powerful but is so inconsequential in volume that until gas hydrates are released by the warming tundra you should really not ignore CO2 input - 'CO2 barely registers on the scale of greehouse gases' does not actually mean anything at all
Greenhouse effect as a fantasy that has never been proved - well that's just a Melanie Phillips type of argument. It has never been proved that the earth is not flat. And the greenhouse effect is now as much a part of scientific fact as AIDS and gravity. To deny it's existence is daft, unless you can prove otherwise, which I doubt you can.I personally don't give a shit as the world will carry on once the human race and many other species have died out, including me. But those who think it's all just a conspiracy backed up by lies and bad science are just being silly.

The sea levels thing is a bit of a weird one. It's based on the assumption that the poles are land masses covered in ice. Which as far as I know, is still not established. If there is more ice in water than ice on land, warming seas would cause the sea levels to fall. Anyway, most data at the moment shows the earth has actually been getting colder for the last few years, (which no doubt is why "global warming" has been rebranded as "climate change"). This could itself cause sea levels to rise if the above case were true. Oh well.
I'm afraid you're a bit misinformed BQ. It is very very well established that the majority of Antarctica is a land mass covered by 2 very large bits of ice. If one were to melt the sea level would rise by something like 10 metres, if the other went, it would be 70m. This is as near to a fact as anything that humans have knowledge about.
As for the old 'global warming rebranded as climate change' argument put forth by the likes of Nigel Lawson it's an argument put forward by those who have no other decent arguments. If you were to read any scientifc literature at all you would see that 'climatic change' has been used since the beginning, at least 30 years ago. 'Global warming' was a phrase created by, and for the use of, the press and the layperson.Oh and the bit about 'more CO2 = more plants' is fantasy.

wheres that bell from, the freshtripe one does not have that type of lever 'ringer' ?Stephen you can get these closer to home too, from http://www.alexmoulton.co.uk/ - I got one from there a few years back. You have to phone them up though to order one (in this day and age!), and I think they've racked up the price a bit too... but they're good - they give off nice resounding note instead of a plink plink kind of noise

So you're saying that disagreeing with the article quoted in the original topic, which is posted on an open forum means it's ok for people to call me a wanker and a cyclist hater.
If you're saying that only certain threads are important enough to warrant welcoming somebody then i guess that makes for a huge amount of pointless threads on here?
I don't get the amount of time to post on here as much as some of you do...this particular thread caught my eye and god forbid i dared to disagree with it..but does that really make it ok for people to be abusive?Nope. Didn't say that.

Funny Dirkbang...always nice to see forum members sticking together in their shared bullying of a newcomer...it can only help to make you all seem even funnier to each other eh?
Thanks for the welcome guys.Well you can go and do a critique on a complete stranger's literature choices on doggingwithgrandmasinnewzealand.com or any website about anything at all, and it'll be equally as welcome.
Try engaging in a thread about I dunno, how you like riding fixed wheel or single-speed bikes or something, that might work. -
If you mapped it by number of other cyclists seen per journey by area cycled in you could come up with some sort of density map... I think you'd need to do a lot of journeys to make anything coherent, and I think counting other cyclists whilst cycling is probably a bit sketchy in terms of keeping an eye on the road...

Yeah I noticed a few pairs... I was considering buying a set for spares, as all the ones that have gone recently have been in fairly average nick.
But then I thought that if I could do a bit of a restoration project for about about the same money I'd rather do that, you know, adding the personal touch blah blah.
But yes, I've got my beady eye on the eBay.... -
Yep, that is them.
I noticed that Bens or whatever they're called do replacement axles for RX-1s and they specifically state that they won't fit Suntour Superbes.
I was thinking that if it was a relatively straightforward job then I'd pop up to a bloke I know in the sticks and get it done - an excuse for a rural bike ride and a bit of mucking about in a workshop, and a bit of a treat for myself in the form of some nice new axles.
But if it comes to sourcing parts form Japan etc. or knocking up working drawings in autoCAD I'll probably just save up for some RX-1s.
They're lovely pedals as I'm sure you know, so I was looking to keep them tidy for as long as possible instead of buying new ones... -
Ok cheers - last time I was in a workshop I mentioned 'turning' and they got all arsey saying that turning was for woodworkers!
But anyway - I would be able to provide the original article, so no drawings - but nothing that couldn't be measured with a micrometer anyway. For machining dimensions, tolerances and surface finish requirement - would it be unreasonable just to say "copy this one"? I don't want to get all AutoCAD on them just for a couple of axles - i.e. I doubt I'll be approaching the biggest company in town for this job, maybe just a jobbing metal worker.
Tolerances, well - I'd just want them to make it the same as the original that I'd provide, i.e it's to fit a 63800 deep groove roller bearing at one end, so obviously the diameter at this point has to be 10mm +/- as little as possible! The other end would have a different diameter, but again, I'd refer them to the original.
It's 316 so I presume no big deal?
Oh and they're Suntour Superbes dmczone
Cheers freezing77

I think they all do, though haven't had a policy since I ditched the van a few years ago...
