Another point of interest might be not to leave your bike with the the chain on the largest chainring or largest sprocket whilst out of use for long periods of time, as this will cause the cables to stretch a bit - which is all it takes.
Could well be bollocks, but I always swap to the smallest cogs when parking it for a few days anyway. -

Errmm... any of you lot using Songbird to look at the internets?
I've just been using it for a few days now, and it seems that sometimes when I go onto a page that has music content (like a few of these),it gives me the option (in an info bar at the bottom of the page) to download the embedded music to my music library (even when there is no obvious music on the page).
This might be old hat to some of you, but it seems like a good thing to me.... -

Here you go Ed:
Edit: this is actually a trade website, so you'd have to convince them you're a wine merchant and buy 3 at once, or email nicely to find out who their source is...http://www.winebox.co.uk/products/wooden-boxes
For the prices I don't think the quality will be amazing or anything, but nothing a bit of sandpaper and varnish won't sort out.

good advice so far (and so fast at this time of night!), they're fantastic, especially the idea of finding a nearby joinery to ask them to build me a sturdy box (for hopefully not a lots of money).
I'm meant to be writing a report, so writing about woodwork is an all too easy distraction for me (I was a cabinet maker, so essentially used to make posh wooden boxes for a living)

Well... I think if you want one quickly you shouldn't waste your time trying to source a shitty box that is the wrong size, but get down to a joinery/cabinet making workshop and ask them for the 4 sides and base cut to size, and then glue and screw it together yourself.
You either need it to be covered in a good weather resistant finish, or at least have it made of a weather resistant wood. So not birch ply cos it'll go black.
It'd take a machinist 10 minutes to prep the wood for you, if they've got the type you want.
Avoid Travis Perkins at all costs. -

I put the the link and the pin in the crook of my arm, then bend my arm and simply flex my bicep and BANG the pin goes back in, whether it wants to or not
