Just checking random cycling websites, and saw Mosquito Cycles http://www.mosquito-bikes.co.uk/ where I got my Soma is now doing Phil Wood bits and bobs.
They say they are "really pleased to have been appointed a Phil Woods dealer, one of only two listed for the UK and the only south of England shop!"

A problem I can see is that I think the two original (ebay) gps units weren't real time units, they record information and download it to your computer. If your bike was stolen, how would you get the info from the unit to yourself, computer/pda/mobile to find out where it was? Who would run the service? would it be automated? would you have to flag the fact that your bike had been stolen before you could track where it was? or where it was going?
Also the power problem, couldn't it be powered somehow like a dynamo light by pedalling, maybe connecting it in someway to the bottom bracket, or is that making it too complicated? One advantage of putting it there would be to make it difficult to remove, since you'd have to take out the bottom bracket to get to it.Its a really good idea, since a load of us are spending as much money on a bike as you would on a cheap secondhand car, knowing where it is, and being able to find it again if it does get stolen could prove priceless...

was going to pose this question in my very own discussion but this seems as good a place as any.
Broke my leg a few years back, when on a motorbike, not doing more than 10-15mph filtering thru heavy traffic down in brixton, man steps out in front of me, looking other way eating chips, I pull hard on brake, lose front end, knee hits concrete, break leg, more concerned about bike, don't realise leg is broken until following evening. operation, on crutches for four-five months.
Now when the police came out to investigate accident I was told that pedestrians have right of way whether light is green or red, and it's upto me to prove that I was not riding dangerously (I know this conversation was in relation to a motorbike accident) but does anyone know if this legal standing is true. Because pedestrians step out like they've got god on their side, not just the law. And its been hacking me off for years, though I have mellowed somewhat, that they seem to disregard not just their safety, but mine as well. -

31trum(murtle) cornelius, i have been on the look out for a while and keep going back to look at that frame for a while it's nice man.
i'm guessing has it got a 1 1/8 head tube??yeah a 1 1/8 head tube, a 68mm english threaded bottom bracket and takes a 120mm rear hub. Geometry measures out to be rather similar to the Soma Smoothie I ride.

I just wanted a ti frame, rode condor's moda before I got my soma, and just couldn't afford it with the spec I wanted, so spent weeks getting outbid on lots of ti road bikes before I managed to get my hands on this one.
Just trying to get my hands on suitable bits to do it justice.quick question re brakes. I've got some campag brakes and levers on my soma, and was thinking of buying some (campag brakes) for this one. The only thing is that with the campag brake lever, you have to pull on it and slide over a little metal rod to open out the front brake so you can remove the front wheel. Not sure if this is a 2007 addition or is a historic thing with campag. If I just brought a bog standard lever (any suggestions on brake levers appreciated) to sit on my bars up by the stem, how would I open up the front brake to get the front wheel out? Has anyone used campag brakes on a track bike before, who can answer? Also if this is going to be a bit of a ball ache, any suggestions on front brakes to get hold of.

ffub There are quire a few cheap fixed/track frames in the US, the bastards. Thing with shipping is you with have to pay for shipping, import duty and VAT. It quickly becomes as expensive as getting a new pukka frame over here, otherwise I would have a couple of Pake framesets lying around. IRO are cheap in the states too. Somas and Surlys don't cost anywhere near what we pay. Tis a shame that no one has sorted out medium scale shipping of these things as there is clearly demand for cheap fixed gear frames in the UK if ebay is anything to go by.
I brought a cheap titanium track frame off ebay, some chinese fella in new york cost £300 all in £200 odd for the bike, £68 worth of vat/customs and £30 shipping, which I thought was a fairly good deal, with the pound being so strong 2 for 1 and all it seems a shame to let the taxman ruin your bike buying fun. The frame did take about two and half weeks to ship over but its all good. It seems seller was using me as a benchmark and now has them on the bay at a starting price, twice what i paid.

got a friend who builds up bmx's from scratch he's a gt freak so that's all he produces, cost me about £180 i think. before I got the big roadbike I was on it all the time, pretty much the whole thing is custom, he finds a frame, talks to you about paint jobs, designs, etc. ridden across town on it, south to west, south to east mostly just use it when I'm meeting people in town, good nice soothing ride down by the river into the southbank.
If anyone's interested I'll forward on his details..should also say it's not an immediate thing, can be a bit of wait as he takes a while to source bits and bobs, and the brakes don't work for toffee, been told it's because of the gyroscope front, but you get used to it.

velocity boy Nah, Cycle Fit have Castelli stuff and it's only mesh down to the usual line where shorts would be.
It sounds more like it's just worn. Cheap lycra can be thin, some colours are more revealing than others, and with a little time all lycra is thread-bare.
Not trying to be argumentative, but I can be if you really want me to.. ;-P but definitely wasn't worn through, mesh area was from the waist down to where the padded seat would be, and you could see the stitching. Also his gear was a bit too expensive for him to be wearing threadbare cycling shorts...

Dunno about this arse-mesh though? Did he have some bib-knicks on backwards or something?!?!?!No! the lycra was supposed to be that way. That's what's so amazing, that geezer walked into shop and thought to himself, you know what, I'll buy the cycling shorts with the see through arse section, they're just the thing to make me go faster...

I've always worn lycra, had too many saddle sore moments with bunched up undies not to, but being a courier from aeons ago I wear shorts over lycra, got to have access to keys, money, phone, pens, etc...
Now I should say I don't hate on those that want to pretend they're in the tdf and wear lycra and nothing else in honour of their heroes, just don't like to see your knob swinging when you get out of the saddle, but I digress, today on the ride in roadie on a nice Condor, turning a big gear, came past, and he had lycra shorts on, so far so okay, but they had some sort of semi see through mesh at the back so that I could see his crack as he motored away from me. Now maybe there's some reason (cooling?) for this but dude! no one needs to see your sweaty hairy crack whilst you ride, it's just not right!! And it's not okay!
I felt dirty just looking at it.
Anyone else had inappropriate cycle wear sightings or is it just me?.... -

that was the most fun I've had on a bike for a long time. thanks for organising, thanks for allowing me to join in again big thanks to ma3k for keeping shit and the group together.
Next time I'll have to be in better shape to keep up with you guys at the front conducting sprints every time we set off from lights, rolled across a big bridge.
Great time.
Won't forget the sound of thirty odd pairs of spd's being clicked in everytime we started off in a hurry, happy times...ps. I think it was Stef I spoke to about the lovely blue glowing light in his back wheel, if you've still got that spare I'd love to have it, let me know how much you want for it and we'll hook up. I'm south, but I work out west, so can pretty much get to anywhere in the centre...

long time lurker and reader, first time poster,
if the weathers good I'm in, haven't built up my fixie yet, frames just arrived from the states, and I've still got to pay customs on it
is my lovely new geared soma allowed? Also got a mate who might be up for it as well
also if I bagsy a bridge does that mean I've got to be first over it?
Does anyone have or know where I can get a brake lever r/h to fit an oversized 31.8mm handlebar. Looking at a couple on the bay (ex bmx/cyclo cross levers) and I'm not sure they'll fit.
