if you want a route going up devil's dyke rather than ditchling (slightly more manageable, pub at the top) then holla at a playa.

is this thread a lure to out the old duffers who wake up to the today programme? this old duffer heard it too.
it was predictably embarassing (jolly beeb reporter saying "gosh" and "fixie" a lot) but it was neutral to the point of being banal which was a bit of a relief. it was also the first mainstream piece i've heard to mention the coming fixed gear apocalypse by acknowledging that the phenomenon had now entered the mainstream and concluding that when something enters the mainstream (i.e. when jolly beeb reporters become aware of it i assume?) it ceases to be cool. the piece finished with the assertion that fixed gears will soon be riden by nurses and grannies alike.
fair enough.
i heard it too, i agree... talked about brakles fixiebikes® but didn't make a big deal of it - seemed to think some were street legal, too.
also, it was pretty funny when the reporter bloke tried out the bike shop guy's bike. cue lots of huffing, puffing and straining followed by: 'i can see why this is fun'!

Yeah, but you're not allowed to ride the "Athlete's Hour" with carbon bling, you HAVE to ride a "normal" Merckx's record-style bike. The performance hour allows aero bits and bobs but people don't seem to bother with that since it's not the 'true' hour record - not even sure you CAN ride it? Boardman might keep it forever :)
sosenka rode a carbon-tubed bike. rules only say you have to have round-tubes. obviously he wasn't acting in the 'spirit' of the rules but that's not really fashionable these days - just ask an MP.
sosenka also tested positive for crystal meth, so it's fair to say that he didn't make all the best choices in life...

that donald hirsch route is pretty good, but completely fucks up in the suburbs.
we did it last year, brighton to paris in a day, didn't really sleep the night before (overnight ferry) and we went totally loony trying to find our way through the housing estates, across major roads etc.
not sure what to suggest except to get some sleep!

^^^ not entirely true... a pearl is longer than a nitto dynamic of the same length. only theory me and elvis could come up with is that the dynamic is measured horizontally, whereas pearl is measured along the stem (ie, at an angle to the horizontal). this isn't what the diagram on the box says tho!

hi firstlove,
welcome. yes, there are a few of us on here - not too many social things happening at the moment because we all seem to be caught up in serious training / injuries / track racing and more.
other than that, should be a bit more lively by august. the seafront and the undercliff are good rides, and we also ride out over the downs a fair bit. drop us all a line when you're down.
@ digs - i've ridden critical mass here once - unpleasant! not very many riders so the cars were really dangerous
