(Thanks for the info @Polky) pizzarat; where I'm failing with it is that (I think) cycle touring is a specific activity that many standard travel insurance policies wouldn't cover. So therefore needing a specialist plan to cover it. Some of it seems to be in the technical wording of bike riding as a one off activity on holiday vs dedicated bike touring. Hence the slight headache and query here!

Thread dredge. @Polky did you have any problems with Sportscover direct? Anyone else have recommendations for annual cycle touring insurance for bike and travel insurance? So far Sports cover direct, Pedalcover and Cycling UK fit the bill... are there any others?

Riders beginning to finish up the JO, Ochiai was first in by a distance and a bunch behind are coming in to Tokyo now from what can be made out. Still lots of riders out there, Paul Rainbow has been posting some scenic pictures of his trip so far. Also there was a fun clip of rider Hiromu Mitsumune looking too tired to think :)

Portraits of the JO riders going up here.

Some nice images coming from the JapaneseOdyssey, fastest rider last year Yusuke Ochiai leads the pack. Riders from France, Netherlands, USA just behind (it is not a race of course). Toward the rear, Barnaby Fox rides on a Brompton. Though there isn't much on social media, Far Ride Magazine did a short video of the start:

My thinking was based on what Hippy and others were saying earlier. 105 groupset, decent wheels, no BMC logo and a steel frame instead of carbon and you would get a brand new Ribble for similar price. I'm sure there are other options with carbon frame if that is your priority for a bit more. Second hand I'd be hoping to snag something with Ultegra and nice wheels that would offset the peace of mind buying new gives you around that £1000 price. I guess it is whether you are angling toward buying an above average spec bike as a bargain second hand (with the sometimes annoying side-effects that used-buying has) or a lower specced 1st hand.
Really like these, looks great on the front like that.
