or if you ride really "extreme" terrain. like miles of pavement and then steep or technical dirt. i'm most bothered by drivetrain efficiency when i am on pavement, so being able to sit mid cassette with a 50t big ring is nice. for me at least unless i had a good bit better w/kg i'd be really grinding on some of the harder dirt climbs in my area with a 1:1 low gear. obviously fitness dependent.

yea for sure i use both. 50 x 11 isn't really necessary per say but i like ripping descents. particularly will use it to sprint into them or on flat sections in the middle of one. this is on a bike that does lots of big mixed surface rides, so can have steep unrelenting gravel and also loads of road. 48/31 x 11-34 maybe would be slightly more optimal but that'd mean grx fd, crank (not available in my preferred length), new pm, etc.

if you have a wide 2x system you can easily avoid shifting the big ring constantly on singletrack. especially with di2. i ride singletrack all the time with 50/34 x 11-40. singletrack i'm basically always in the small ring. 34 x 11 is plenty big on tight/tech stuff. in any case di2 fd are so good that you can shift it really most any time without a hassle.

i feel like 90% of people's problems with tubeless is not picking stuff that is known to work well.
schwalbe tubeless is pretty faultless. have used enve, hed, easton, and lightbicycle rims with no problems (with schwalbe. had trouble seating rene herse tires).
in like the last 2000 hours of riding i have had 1 flat that didn't seal, and that was an old furious fred with not enough sealant and a big hole. i've had a number of other punctures all of which sealed with enough air that i could get home without much trouble.
i agree that road tubeless is not a super clear win, but i ride rough roads, light dirt, etc on my road bike and i think tubeless is a clear benefit then. i can go to 50psi on 30mm tires without worrying about rim impacts, and get lots of grip and have never had a pinch.

required a 140mm -17 stem. handling is a bit sharp feeling and the front wheel feels a bit too under me in sharp corners but mostly it rides pretty well. having such great leverage on the brake levers is very nice for city riding.
